Please see the attached post about Wrigley Field being host to the next Winterclassic.

I LOVE Wrigley Field, it (in my opinion) is the best ball park in the country!!!

Nothing would be better than to combine the best field with the best sport.

Hawks host Wings at Wrigley

I saw this...went to Southwest.com and looked to see how much tickets would cost...and it wouldn't let me price out stuff that far. My best friend is moving about an hour out of Chicago and I'd be able to see her....and see a hockey game outside....it would be great!

It's being talked about at TSN, and other spots including on ESPN that the next Winter Classic will be played between the Hawks and the Wings at Wrigley Field in Chicago on January 1st, 2009.

The stadium used for the last Winter classic in Buffalo (or should I say the 1st WC?) held some 71,000. Wrigley Field holds 41,000. Either the NHL doesn't think the "West" can draw as many people as the far Northeast can, or they plan on adding standing room only for 30,000 on the field. This should be interesting to see how fast the seats sell out. Come on Chicago, Detroit and lower Ontario! Let's buy those tickets and fill that windy Cubby home!

My suggestion is to watch closely when they announce and find someone in Chicago to get on the phone or in line for tickets. They will go really, really fast.

Chicago is a good choice, Soldier field might have been a better choice but I am wondering if the decrease in venue size might not be a result of some unforeseen consequence of the Buffalo game? It's not like the Bears will be home.

Wherever it is, i'm glad it's not at Yankee Stadium. The last sporting event held in that park should be a Yankees game.

Well they COULD do it at Ford Field, whic hosted a sell out crowd for Michigan/Michigan St but it wouldn't be outdoor. I'd like to see Pittsburgh get the game one year as well. Too bad it doesn't get cold enough to do this at Angel Stadium ;-)

NHL.com official announcement - Blackhawks, Red Wings Meet in the great outdoors

And the rumor mill has the 2010 festivities to be held at the new Yankee Stadium between the Bruins and the Rangers! I am sooooo there!!! ots.gif

From that announcement

"We also acknowledge the interest and efforts of the New York Yankees and the City of New York throughout the NHL Winter Classic 2009 site selection process. We look forward to continuing discussions regarding the possibility of a future Winter Classic game at the new Yankee Stadium."

eh... I don't know if I like where they are putting the rink.
I know its in the dead center of the entire baseball field and its the best place for the camera angles, but the closer you sit to home plate the farther away you get from the rink....

There's not that much foul room in Wrigley though, so I guess people wont be too far away.
They'll all be closer than in Buffalo, anyway.

If they do build the "Los Angeles Stadium" then it would be a perfect opportunity to hold the Winter Classic here in SoCal. A new stadium that is neutral territory. Hockey outside in 80 degree weather watching your favorite team, now that is just interesting....at least you won't have snow to mess up the game.

Reebok and the NHL challenge hockey fans to find the lost logo at NHL Winter Classic 2009

QUOTE
On New Year's Day, 2009, Reebok will give each of the more than 40,000 fans who attend the NHL Winter Classic game between the Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Blackhawks at Wrigley Field a pair of binoculars to find the NHL player on the ice without a Reebok logo. Fans in the stands and those watching on television will have a chance to win. In-stadium contestants will be asked to enter via text or phone, while those tuning in on television will be able to enter online.

They actually showed the commercial advertising the game on the Ponda video board at the Columbus game.

I recently heard that the skating surface was being fabricated in Southern California and some of the additional equipment was being built in Atlanta. Isn't it interesting that the technology for this ice event comes from the sun belt!? ots.gif

Interesting, but not at all surprising. The sun belt has had ample opportunity to innovate and develop solutions for our unfriendly ice rink climate ... cool.gif vs cold.gif Technology meeting with classic will certainly make for a fun New Year's Day!!

I would love to see it in the later afternoon in Long Beach with the sand, sea, palm trees and Queen Mary in the background. Have the game be the back end of of an outdoor classic doubleheader with an Eastern game kicking it off. Ducks and Kings, obviously.
