The Anaheim Ducks, needing to trim payroll, have placed defenseman Mathieu Schneider on waivers with the expectation that a team will claim him and $5.75 million salary for this season.

Once they move Schneider off the books, the Ducks are expected to re-sign Teemu Selanne.

What's wrong? They're old (except for Bryz who was a diva), and overpaid!

How sad, I was hoping and praying that we'd somehow keep him and get rid of others. He was almost definitely our most stable and reliable defender last year and it always looked like he was smiling and having fun. I will miss him.

I think the biggest issue is we've HAD to move all three of those players, so everyone knew if they could outwait us, they could get them free or dirt cheap (ala Andy Mac). The salary cap can be a real bitch...

Too bad you can't re-work a contract ala the NFL, to get yourself under the cap.

Now that we have Scott for a whole season, I expect our defense to look/act better.

While it sucks that the Ducks had to waive him it's going to suck even more when nobody claims him and the Ducks have to put him on re-entry waivers which means they will have to pay half of his salary if/when a team claims him. The Ducks didn't miss out too much on the trade, though - they were probably only going to get a mid-round draft pick anyway. The Blackhawks just traded Robert Lang to the Habs for a 2nd round pick in 2010 but Lang was cheaper and is a 20-goal scorer so he had a bit more value. I was expecting the Ducks to get a third round pick for Schneider but now...I'm just hoping that some team is dumb enough to claim him on waivers and take his full salary away from Anaheim.

I think it shows that other GM's know how to make a GM over the cap squeal.

I am sorry that Schneider will not be on our D this season. I hope we can absorb the loss of his outstanding production.

I have no idea what your definition of dumb is, but picking up Schneider off waivers at his price is anything but dumb for many teams in the league.

Shocking....but oddly, not completely unexpected either.

My question: Did Burke make a few calls, and KNOWS he will be claimed? I hope so, because 1/2 salary on recall waivers isn't appealing in the least. eyebrow.gif

He's not going to clear waivers. He will be taken by one of the first 10 teams.

Dumb because they could get him for half-price later this week on re-entry waivers! What's better to you: Schneider at $5.6 million or Schneider at $2.8 million?

I doubt he would be picked up. Most of the other team GMs can count their dollars too and re entry with half price ounds much more tempting for most of them...

Because they won't get him at half-price. There are 30 teams in the league, and as soon as the number of teams interested in claiming him off waivers is bigger than one, which I am absolutely certain it is, it is an incredibly high and stupid risk to try and save the money for the majority of those teams; not all of them will take that risk. He will be claimed.

The first ten in the waiver order. So the bottom 10.

If a team wanted to get Schneider at full price they would have given the Ducks a third or fourth round pick and traded for him. The fact that none did tells me that they are not interested in paying him his full salary but they are sure to be interested in paying him half of his salary.

Again, just a gut hunch but I think Schneider will clear waivers and that the Ducks will be paying for both him and Bertuzzi this season thanks to Burke giving them both two-year deals instead of one-year deals last summer.

page two and nobody has yet realized that Los Angeles, who are several million dollars beneath the salary FLOOR, and in need of defensive help will probably put in a claim. Does anyone know anything about hockey that occurs beyond a 15 mile radius of the Pond?

Don't think so. We don't know what Burke was asking for Schneider. We know how it went with Bryz, if Burke's not getting what he asks he isn't going to accept the "best offer" if that is under his impression of the player's value. He was probably asking for a good prospect and a 2nd round pick or something in that area. He could have traded him to a team like Ottawa for a 5th in a second but had no interest to make a good team stronger for a price like that.

I did say he won't go far... wink.gif

But the Kings have different options of getting above the cap minimum, so I don't think that is really the big point here...

The Kings need to get to the floor, that's true, but they also have a budget and they cannot afford both Schneider and Patrick O'Sullivan from what I've read so I, for one, would be surprised to see the Kings claim him.

Los Angeles not only needs to get to the floor but they also need to get a few million over the floor in order to operate. As it stands, meeting the floor is not enough for them because their roster is chocked full of young players with a large cap hit. Say for example Drew Doughty sucks and needs to be sent down. Then the Kings have to find a way to make up for the $3million cap hit on it's way towards Manchester. And that is just Doughty. They will have a roster full of rookies this season so meeting the floor is not sufficient in the event that a player has to be sent down long term.

Claiming Schneider remedies all of that....assuming they sign O'Sullivan as well. The Kings will claim him. If they don't then Lombardi is dumber than I have thought.
