QUOTE
Today, a Michigan athletic representative said Michigan senior captain Mark Mitera will be out for an extended period of time due to the injury he sustained in last night's game against St. Lawrence. Surgery is a definite possibility, but the decision won't be made until Mitera's family and doctors discuss options.

With 38.8 seconds remaining in the first period of Michigan season's opening game yesterday, Mitera left the ice and didn't return.

Mitera and St. Lawrence junior forward Augie DiMarzo collided and lay on the ice entangled for a moment. Two teammates helped a limping Mitera back to the Michigan bench.

Let's hope it's not as serious as the coach thinks. Mitera will be one of our cornerstones for the future.

Hopefully Mitera heals, we could use him comes the future, he has Pronger-like qualities in his game.

Not one thing is going right for the Ducks right now. The owner could be on his way to prison, the GM is on his way to Toronto, their best prospect is in the AHL and they can't afford to call him up, the NHL team is winless and looks like the worst team in hockey and now their best defensive prospect is facing surgery just one game into his college season.

Yep...pretty much the worst time to be a Ducks fan...ever.

And to add insult to injury ...

QUOTE
Steve Kampfer, a fourth-round pick of the Ducks in 2007, remains hospitalized in Ann Arbor, Mich., after he was attacked by a University of Michigan football player early Sunday morning.

Kampfer, 20-year-old defenseman on Michigan's hockey team, was thrown head first onto the sidewalk after he and a friend were confronted by a group of young men, university police said. A Ducks spokesman said that Kampfer suffered a fractured skull.

Good lord...things just keep getting better. I hope Kampfer makes a full recovery and that the "men" that did this to him enjoy some time in prison.

The witness said two of the men walked past Kampfer and his friend, shoving them aside, and then the third picked up Kampfer and slammed him into the sidewalk. Kampfer’s friend yelled at the group, but the men continued walking south on Church Street, the witness said.

He said Kampfer wasn’t moving and appeared to be unconscious after the attack.

Surgery for Ducks prospect Mitera not certain
QUOTE
Defenseman Mark Mitera, a first-round selection by the Ducks in the 2006 NHL entry draft, has not necessarily decided to have surgery to repair knee damage suffered in the University of Michigan’s season-opener Oct. 10, a Michigan Daily story said.

The campus newspaper quoted the player’s father, Ken Mitera, saying the family has not made a decision on the best course of action.

The injury, a torn anterior cruciate ligament...

And, from Brady's blog posted by DK:

...Mitera suffered a torn ACL and... still contemplating whether or not to have surgery, or to just rehab it
From Brady's Blog today >>

You can't "rehab" a torn ACL (unless it's a partial tear under 15%).

If he tore it, he's going to have surgery... unless he's retiring from hockey.

Not that I know of, Kampfer will be playing very soon though, likely the next Wolverines game.

Kampfer is back on the ice. He played in the December 27 Michigan game.

Mitera skates and contemplates a return:
QUOTE
Last Friday, just 64 days since having his ACL reconstructed on Nov. 6, Mitera was on the ice skating by himself at Yost Ice Arena. He has skated twice more since then, for about 20 minutes each.

QUOTE
"Personally, I think I should be able to play (before the season ends)," Mitera said after practice at Yost. "I mean, I feel OK right now, but I need to make sure everything heals properly. That's my goal - even if it's for limited ice time. To get back for one more game at Yost would be great.

"As of right now I feel like everything has been going faster than I expected. I thought it would be a longer process, but I have only been on the ice three times, so it's tough to gauge that final timeline," he added. "It's still at least another month before decisions need to be made, depending on where the team is and what's at stake for me."

Kampfer attacked again

This time on the ice, but he's not seriously injured, thankfully. Video of the incident included in link.

That is an ugly, ugly incident for the game of ice hockey.

Talk about smearing the reputation of the game... a two-handed slash to the neck of a player already clearly down on the ice is just plain assault, and way across the line in any interpretation of the incident. There is no place in the game for the stick to be used as a weapon, and that's what happened there. I hope that not only does the CCHA/NCAA punish the slasher to the max, but that the district attorney for that area steps in and puts him away for a little while to send a message.

Michigan State hockey coach Rick Comley suspended two players for the remainder of this season for their roles in an on-ice attack on a Michigan player Saturday night.
...
"What happened near the end of the game this weekend is not the way in which we want our hockey program represented," Comley wrote in the statement. "We cannot condone their actions. We felt that we had to send a strong message that this behavior will not be tolerated."
...
"Everything came back negative," Kampfer said of tests run after the incident. "It's just a strain in the neck. That's all we're focused on."

Kampfer said he hoped to return to practice today or Wednesday.

"I have a couple of more tests to run, but hopefully everything goes out pretty well," he said. "Everything's just really stiff. But it's like the first couple of days out of the neck brace, just trying to move it around. Everything's fine."

Some good news on Steve Kampfer....he was back on the ice last Saturday against #1 ranked Notre Dame and was +2 in UM's 2-1 victory over the Irish. That's very good to hear! Go Steve! anaducksos1.gif(Detroit Free Press: UM Upsets No. 1 Notre Dame)
