The phrase "measuring-stick game" is typically applied to a matchup against a very good opponent; the game measures a team's ability compared to the highest standard of play.

Monday's game against the Colorado Avalanche was a measuring stick for the Ducks, but of a different variety. Through its first 19 games the Avs had only five regulation wins, easily the fewest in the NHL, while the Ducks were meandering around at 2-3-2 over their past seven.
