TSN's Ice Chips

Defenceman Bret Hedican did not skate (upper body injury) and is day-to-day. He was injured Sunday after falling hard into the boards. - Orange County Register

Patrick Kane missed much of the first period after hurting his knee in a big collision with Detroit's Daniel Cleary on Tuesday. Kane returned in the second period, but was not much of a factor. The Blackhawks practised at Wrigley Field in preparation for tomorrow's Winter Classic. - Daily Herald Times/TSN

Paul Stastny underwent surgery Tuesday on his fractured right forearm at Denver's Rose Medical Center and the Avalanche confirmed he would be out six to eight weeks from the time of his December 23 injury. - Denver Post

Coach Dave Tippett did not attend the team's optional practice Tuesday due to illness. He is expected to coach tonight against New Jersey. - Dallas Morning News

The Red Wings practised at Wrigley Field this afternoon and defenceman Nicklas Lidstrom (ankle) is expected to play in the Winter Classic tomorrow. - TSN

Marc Pouliot was hit hard into the boards during the 2nd period of Tuesday's game against the Senators. He had to be helped to the dressing room and did not return. The initial diagnosis was a minor concussion. Gilbert Brule has been recalled from Springfield to fill the void. - TSN

Forward Marian Gaborik (lower body) and defenceman Kim Johnsson (personal) are questionable for tonight's game against San Jose. - Star Tribune

Forward Alex Tanguay was hit hard into the boards early in the first period of the Habs game against the Lightning last night. He left the game and did not return. The Canadiens said Tanguay has an upper body injury and will have an MRI exam today. Ryan O’Byrne and Ben Maxwell were assigned to the Hamilton Bulldogs today. - TSN

Injured goalie Martin Brodeur began working out off the ice Tuesday. His re-hab is apparently going well and he could be back sometime in February, which would be early. - Star Ledger

Trent Hunter did not skate Tuesday after suffering a back injury in the third period of Monday's game against the Rangers. He is questionable for this afternoon's game against the Panthers. Forward Mitch Fritz was placed on waivers today. - Newsday

The Flyers lost Simon Gagne early in Tuesday's game after he took a big hit from Vancouver defenceman Kevin Bieksa. He appeared to injure his shoulder, but the team would only call it an "upper-body injury". Rookie Claude Giroux replaced Gane on the Flyers top line with Mike Richards and Mike Knuble. - Philadephia Inquirer

Goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov missed practice Tuesday because of tightness in his back. His status for tonight is uncertain. - Arizona Republic

Defenceman Marek Malik was scratched from Tuesday's game due to illness. Defenceman Lukas Krajicek (upper body) returned to the lineup after missing a game. - Tampa Tribune

Forward Jeremy Williams suffered an apparent shoulder injury in the first period of last night's game against the Thrashers and did not participate in practice today. Jiri Tlusty was called up from the Marlies. Defencemen Luke Schenn skated in all drills. - TSN

Goaltender Curtis Sanford will be placed on IR after suffering a groin injury during the morning skate. He apparently hoped it would loosen up and wanted to try it after the pre-game skate. He ended up getting pulled. Coach Alain Vigneault said the Canucks started actively pursuing the trade for Jason Labarbra after Sanford was injured. Labarbra will join the team in Nashville and will start one of the two games on the road trip. Cory Shnieder will not be getting sent down. After giving up a goal on the first shot he faced Tuesday, he played very well and stopped Scott Hartnell on a pair of breakaways. - TSN
