Claude Julien revealed that Patrice Bergeron, who remains in recovery from a Dec. 20 concussion, skated Sunday and Monday. According to Julien, Milan Lucic and Andrew Ference also skated, but he offered no timeline on when any of the injured might return. - Boston Globe

Todd Bertuzzi skated this morning and looked pretty good. However, according to head coach Mike Keenan, they're leaning towards waiting one more game to rest his hip-flexor/groin injury. The team had an optional skate this morning. Jarome Iginla and Mike Cammalleri didn't skate with the team but they were out early working on timing together. Adrian Aucoin, Craig Conroy and Dion Phaneuf didn't skate. - TSN

Defenceman Adam Foote (triceps) and forward Ian Laperriere did not accompany the team on their road trip. "He's skating and progressing," Granato said of Foote. "The earliest he could return would be Edmonton." Andrew Raycroft will get his fourth straight start in goal against Columbus tonight. - Rocky Mountain News

Wild defenceman Marc-Andre Bergeron, on injured reserve because of a lower-body injury, returned to practice Monday and said he felt good and hopes to be available against the Coyotes tonight. Winger Owen Nolan, also troubled by a leg injury, left the ice early, and forward Derek Boogaard (upper body) missed practice. - Pioneer Press

Although he practised with the team, Saku Koivu says he will not make the trip to Boston for Tuesday's game and is not sure about a return against Nashville on Thursday. Jaroslav Halak will start in Boston and Tom Kostopoulos will play. Carey Price skated on his own for 20 minutes, which head coach Guy Carbonneau said "is a big step." - TSN

Rick DiPietro (knee) and Freddy Meyer (groin) will not play against the Rangers Tuesday. - Newsday

Markus Naslund skipped practice with a slight groin injury Monday, but he said "it's nothing serious" and expects to be in Tuesday's lineup against the Islanders. - Tribune Review

Dany Heatley has been moved off the top powerplay unit and will be replaced with either Mike Fisher or Chris Neil to give a presence in front of the net. Anton Volchenkov (upper body) has missed four games and Cody Bass (shoulder) has missed seven games and is out indefinitely. - TSN

Daniel Briere (groin) said Monday he is feeling better and that the pain is largely gone, but he is not 100 percent and wants to wait until he feels he is before stepping back into a game. The Flyers announced Tuesday that they will assign Briere to their American Hockey League affiliate, the Philadelphia Phantoms, for conditioning purposes. Also, Antero Niittymaki likely will be in net for one of the games in Florida this week, either Tampa Bay on Thursday or Florida on Friday. - Philadelphia Daily News/News Release

Forward Pascal Dupuis left Monday's practice after skating for just 25 minutes with the team. Dupuis left last week's game against Atlanta with an undisclosed injury and hasn't played since. As far as his status for Tuesday's game against Philly, coach Michel Therrien said, "We're not quite sure yet." - Tribune Review

Matt Pettnger was rewarded with a spot on a line with Vincent Lecavalier and Vinny Prospal on Monday. "He was getting on loose pucks, and the last 10 games he was forechecking well," coach Rick Tocchet said. "He showed what we're looking for and got a promotion." - St. Petersburg Times

Ryan Hollweg will take the place of Nikolai Kulemin, who took a shot off the ankle when he was playing with Marlies. MRI results for Jeff Finger show he will be out 10-14 days. - TSN

Jannik Hansen will be a scratch, with Taylor Pyatt going on the second line with Mats Sundin and Pavol Demitra going down to fourth line. Roberto Luongo is a possibility for Thursday, while Sami Salo skated again today but has yet to take contact drills. He will return Sunday at the earliest. - TSN

With both of them playing tonight, they may not have any extra energy to build up this hype for their meeting tomorrow night ...

What observers can't understand is how two good friends became enemies in so short a time. Only three years ago, they roomed together in Turin at the Winter Olympics, and the two were often seen together off the ice, hanging out, shopping, taking in the Italian sights.

Then, boom.

Neither the 23-year-old Ovechkin, last year's NHL scoring champion and MVP, nor the 22-year-old Malkin, this season's scoring leader, will say what went wrong.

When Washington rallied from three goals down to win 4-3 in Pittsburgh on Oct. 16, Ovechkin didn't score but appeared to go out of his way to hit Malkin at any opportunity.

''We'll stick up (for Malkin), like you would for any teammate,'' Crosby said. ''They're intense, physical games and as long as that's the way they stay, that's safe. But if there's deliberate intent to hurt someone, you kind of step outside the line a bit, you have to make sure you stick up for your teammate.''
