Todd Marchant will be out two weeks because of a fractured finger on his left hand. Doctors had inserted a pin in that finger, but it was determined that the pin wouldn't be enough to hold the bone in place if he were to keep playing. Rookie defenceman Brett Festerling did not return after taking a Marian Hossa shot on the inside of his left knee 16 minutes into the second period Wednesday. An X-ray did not look favorable, coach Randy Carlyle said. The Ducks scheduled Festerling to undergo an MRI on Thursday, meaning he would not travel with the team on a flight to Pittsburgh for Friday's game against the Penguins. - LA Times/Orange County Register

Aaron Ward aggravated a charley horse after a hit from Montreal's Andrei Kostitsyn Tuesday, an injury that kept him from traveling with his teammates to Long Island. Ward will miss at least the next two games, with coach Claude Julien estimating he might be shelved for a week. - Boston Globe

Coach Paul Maurice shuffled his lines Wednesday and may move Sergei Samsonov off Eric Staal's line to Rod Brind'Amour's line with Justin Williams. Ray Whitney may shift to Staal's line with Tuomo Ruutu, and Matt Cullen may centre a line with Scott Walker and Chad LaRose. - News Observer

Peter Budaj will start against St. Louis tonight, his first start since Jan. 4. He has a 5-3 career record against St. Louis. Andrew Raycroft suffered a minor calf injury Tuesday against Columbus but wasn't scheduled to play tonight. - Rocky Mountain News

The team assigned right wing Maksim Mayorov to Syracuse of the AHL on Wednesday. - Transaction Wire

Fabian Brunnstrom (high ankle) has skated the past two days, and coach Dave Tippett said he's a day or two away from skating with the team. Brunnstrom will go on the trip to Florida for games Monday and Wednesday, but Tippett said he's not sure if he will play before the All-Star break. - Fort Worth Star-Telegram

Derek Meech was on the Red Wings' fourth line in place of Kirk Maltby for Wednesday night's game against the Anaheim Ducks. Maltby was a healthy scratch for the second time this season. - Detroit Free Press/Detroit News

Centre Kamil Kreps (shoulder) practiced for the second day in a row, and Peter DeBoer said Kreps is "50-50" as to whether he would play against the Flyers on Friday. - Miami Herald

Defenceman Jack Johnson is close to returning. Johnson injured his shoulder Oct. 12, during the second game of the season, and had surgery to repair a partially torn rotator cuff. Johnson won't play tonight against Detroit, but coach Terry Murray left open the possibility of a return Saturday at Dallas. Jonathan Quick will start in goal tonight. - LA Daily News

Alex Kovalev (flu) will be a game-time decision against Nashville. The club has called up Gregory Stewart in case Kovalev can't go. Jaroslav Halak will start in goal and coach Guy Carbonneau says he will try to get Denis into action next week. - TSN

Defenceman Alexander Sulzer may see his first NHL action tonight. The Predators recalled Sulzer from Milwaukee of the American Hockey League on Wednesday. Defenceman Greg de Vries was placed on injured reserve with what appears to be post-concussion syndrome. Defenceman Shea Weber (bruised foot) is questionable for today's game against the Canadiens, and Dan Hamhuis (ankle) and Kevin Klein (illness) are also at less than 100 percent. - Tennessean

Martin Biron will start tonight against Tampa, and Antero Niittymaki will start tomorrow against the Florida Panthers. Winger Claude Giroux is expected to return to the lineup tonight after missing the last five games recovering from a concussion suffered when he was elbowed in the head by Anaheim's Corey Perry on Jan. 2. - Philadelphia Daily News/Comcast Sportsnet

The Coyotes called up winger Steven Goertzen after rookie Viktor Tikhonov suffered a hand injury. Goertzen was a healthy scratch on Tuesday. - Arizona Republic

Torrey Mitchell has joined San Jose's top minor league affiliate for a conditioning assignment in his comeback from a preseason leg injury. Mitchell hasn't played this year after breaking both bones in his lower left leg during San Jose's second practice of training camp last September. Defenceman Brad Lukowich was back with the club Wednesday after undergoing surgery on Monday on a sports hernia. He is expected to return shortly after the All-Star break. - San Francisco Chronicle

Forward Keith Tkachuk did not suffer a concussion on the play that knocked him out of Tuesday's game in Calgary and is expected to be in the lineup tonight against Colorado. - Post Dispatch
