Based on the discussion going on over in the AllDucks Talk Forum about Scott Niedermayer admitting he doesn't know if he wants to play next season or not and that he will not make up his mind until this summer, do you think that the Ducks should trade him before the March 4th trading deadline or not? Please vote and feel free to explain/discuss your reasoning in this thread.

I voted NO, but that is based on Bob Murray having enough guts to press the issue with him to at least get an indication that he would stay in Anaheim if he indeed is going to play in the NHL next year.

I would not put the temptation to throw Scotty under the bus in order to reap some assets ahead of him deciding to retire as a Duck.

if we can get some great offer coming back for him, then i say yes. we might lose him for nothing at the end of the year anyway..

minimum that we should get. high first rder (top 10), a solid goalie prospect, and a top-2 defensive prospect

or a low first rder (10-25), a second rder, top-2 defensive prospect, solid goalie prospect and a 3rd liner signed past next yr.

I voted yes, with the caveat that it changes to a no if he commits to the team BEFORE the trade deadline. IF not as much as I would hate it, Murry needs to get what he can for the future instead of getting nothing at all at the end of the season if he chooses not to come back.

I voted no. I can see the other side of this argument, however, we need Scotty and trading him would be a loss that we simply cannot bear right now. I would prefer that he not wait until the last minute to make a decision-just as everyone else does-but I also want a million dollars, and that's not going to happen either. It's a matter between Murray and Niedermayer and they'll settle it somehow. I suppose we'll all just have to wait until the end of the season [or the deadline...] to find out.

I voted no. I would not trade him because deep down I think there is still a possibility that he will play next year.

I agree and would add: I don't think the Ducks can afford to throw in the towel on the season. The next two games and first handful on the road trip will tell a lot about if the team is still in the mix. If they lay an egg in the next 5 games, then maybe be sellers.

If they're still in the mix, there's no way I would trade Scott ... even at the risk of him walking away for nothing. We can always go after a UFA and not have to give up assets -- or "get him for nothing."

I'm choosing the safe side of it and voted yes. Obviously, like SC says, we don't wanna have to go through another headache like the one we did last year regarding his playing status. So I'd say we trade him for some future assets(couple of picks and prospects) and even if he does decide to come back next year, we still have a chance to sign him if we want to since his salary'll be off our books by then.

Anaheim's chances of getting a top 10 1st round pick is rather slim. More than slim, in fact. It's incredibly unlikely. With Niedermayer's contract, the teams that are going to want him are going to be playoff teams with Cup hopes. These are not teams that are going to have high 1st round picks, unless they are lucky enough to have a 1st round pick from another team.

Anaheim doesn't need a goalie prospect, and a defensive prospect is likely going to take time to develop. In other words, trading Niedermayer accomplishes very little unless for the near future and unless, as l&g pointed out, he's hinted that he will move to another team next season. 432j put it very well - Anaheim can't afford to throw in the towel right now. They are still in the mix, and how can the players trust Murray if he's willing to throw in the towel when they still a team very much in the playoff picture? If Niedermayer retires, they can make a bid for a good UFA, and all they have to spend is money.

Rooch20, it's a slap in the face to Niedermayer to trade him and expect him to return to the Ducks.
