"We had talked to Anaheim a little bit," he added. "But we got the sense that they probably were not going to trade [Pronger] and if they did, it was going to cost us prospects [Karl] Alzner, [Simeon] Valarmov and [John} Carlson, all these young kids that we've accumulated and that didn't make any sense."

Caps pursued Anaheim's Chris Pronger

No wonder it didn't get done

I was wondering about the Caps.

I don't know why McPhee doesn't just say he wasn't serious about making any moves. He must have thought he was going to land a big fish with a Cheerio on a string or something.

His "pursuit" of Chris Pronger apparently consisted of a drive-by of the 99-cent store to see if he was in the window.

you know... that's still not enough for Pronger.

I would want a roster player as well.

Just sayin'

Karl Alzner would have been a roster player for sure. Maybe not a veteran which I assume you were referring too but Alzner could step in right away. The possibility of him playing with his idol Scott Niedermayer could have been cool.

sorry, I was vague... I would want someone for the 1st/2nd line...

in this scenario we Do not trade Odell for Christensen.

To me you take Alzner, one of the other two and a Scoring forward... Fehr or Laich

I think any GM in the league would, from the Ducks' point of view. Alzner is ready, Carlson is close, so is Varlamov. And all three are going to be amazing...

I just went over to the Caps site to check out their roster, and saw that McPhee is doing some damage control. There is a video there with his face on it with microphones in his face entitled "No Deal is better than a Bad Deal".

He should have swung a deal for Brett Hedican and Bill Guerin to keep up with the Jones's!

More from McPhee, as it seems, per today's Puck Daddy Headlines:
QUOTE
• Yesterday, Capitals Insider broke the news that the Washington Capitals were in the hunt for Chris Pronger from the Anaheim Ducks until the price became too high: Elite prospects Karl Alzner, Simeon Valarmov and John Carlson, plus more. Today, Capitals owner Ted Leonsis wrote an outstanding blog about the NHL Trade Deadline and the Capitals' decision not to be an active participant in the dealing -- with what would appear to be candid comments about the Pronger deal that wasn't. Relaying the words of GM George McPhee that it was a 'sucker's bet,' Leonsis wrote: "We were in the mix for a great vet player. The ask was for four of our young assets. We all had to chuckle in that this team was asking us to rebuild their team for them all in one fell swoop."

If he still wants those three guys the Caps are going to hang up pretty quickly, however.

Pronger is a good player and is a big part of the Ducks defense. If a team wants to get him they are going to have to pay a high price because it's not like the Ducks want to trade Chris Pronger.

Put it this way...I have a dog that I love very much. If someone came along and wanted to buy my dog I would demand at least $100,000 from them...and even then I'm not sure I would sell her. Is that an outrageous fee? Certainly - but it's the minimum amount it would take for me to feel like I was compensated fairly for my loss. Maybe the potential buyer would say "We all had to chuckle in that this guy was asking us to buy him out of debt in one fell swoop" but that's exactly the point. You'd have to give me something extreme for me to give up something I do not want, or need, to give up.

Now, once the Ducks find out whether or not Scott Niedermayer is going to play for them next season things change. Then, due to the salary cap, they will probably be motivated to trade Pronger and the price may go down. But for now I'm glad to hear that Murray was asking for the moon in exchange for a Norris Trophy winner, Hart Trophy winner, Stanley Cup Champion and Hall of Famer all rolled up into one enormous, intimidating package.

ESPN's Pierre LeBrun says that the Flyers and Blues are two of "several" teams that plan on making an offer for Pronger in June. LINK

And we can already tell you Philadelphia and St. Louis are among the several clubs that intend to make serious pitches for Pronger come June.

I laugh at how ESPN was certain that Pronger was going to be moved, with someone writing an article on it just about every other day, and now they're saying, "We weren't wrong, we just didn't say when he would be moved." I'm starting to realize why some people call ESPN the tabloids of sports news. Just look at their MLB page. Nothing but stories on how sad A-Rod is.

If anyone has listened to the State of the Franchise podcast on the official website, he does strongly allude to a potential handshake agreement between one or more players that we traded away to come back and sign a la Keith Tkachuk in St. Louis a couple seasons ago.

Your dog has sentimental value to you. Pronger does not have sentimental value to the Ducks organization. He's a high quality player, and they want a high quality return for him.

Murray knew he was asking for a huge overpayment for Pronger, and I doubt he seriously expected that deal to get done. It just isn't a realistic trade from McPhee's viewpoint, unless they are going to make a huge push to win the Stanley Cup in the next two seasons. If Murray puts together a more realistic package, one that included one of Alzner or Carlson, it would have still been a great deal for Anaheim. The difference is, it would have been Anaheim selling at the trade deadline. No package that Murray puts together that involves Pronger is going to be anything less than a step backward for Anaheim this season, even if it has real substance moving forward next season and beyond. Murray was clearly unwilling to give up on this season. He just wanted to make sure that if they were going to take such a drastic step backwards for this season, that they were going to get a lot in return - certainly more than Pronger would really be worth. Who knows? McPhee might have been that interested in Pronger as the piece that put them over the top, and he might have been willing to sacrifice the future of the team for just that goal. It wouldn't be the first time.

I'm happy that Murray was willing to ask a lot for Pronger, but I think Murray would be more than willing to give up Pronger. He might not want to give him up, but he certainly seems to feel that if it can have a very positive impact on Anaheim's future that it is a deal that needs to be done.

I couldn't agree more or put it into better words, from your or from Murray's point of view.

My feeling is, both Biron and Antero Niittymaki will both be gone. Keep in mind, there is no goalie in the [Phialdelphia] system ready to be a No. 1.

When I asked [Philadelphia's GM Paul] Holmgren this afternoon at "breakup" day whether he would look into possibly trading for a former No. 1 (J-S Giguere) would like to be a starter again, he said he would explore "all options."

If the Ducks were to trade Giguere they could probably keep Pronger & Niedermayer for next season. That wouldn't suck. However, Giguere has to approve any trade so that makes it a lot tougher to move him.

QUOTE
3. J.S. Giguere- Not my ideal choice but it is a choice nonetheless. He's a proven goalie, can win in the playoffs and steal games. He's had a tough year but that's never stopped the Avs before (Roy, Theodore, Raycroft). I'd rate our chances of getting him as "good."

Trade would probably involve Wolski, Svatos and a pick for him. I wouldn't be overjoyed if we acquired him but I wouldn't be pissed.
