Caps pursued Anaheim's Chris Pronger
No wonder it didn't get done

I was wondering about the Caps.
I don't know why McPhee doesn't just say he wasn't serious about making any moves. He must have thought he was going to land a big fish with a Cheerio on a string or something.
His "pursuit" of Chris Pronger apparently consisted of a drive-by of the 99-cent store to see if he was in the window.

I would want a roster player as well.
Just sayin'

Karl Alzner would have been a roster player for sure. Maybe not a veteran which I assume you were referring too but Alzner could step in right away. The possibility of him playing with his idol Scott Niedermayer could have been cool.

sorry, I was vague... I would want someone for the 1st/2nd line...
in this scenario we Do not trade Odell for Christensen.
To me you take Alzner, one of the other two and a Scoring forward... Fehr or Laich

I think any GM in the league would, from the Ducks' point of view. Alzner is ready, Carlson is close, so is Varlamov. And all three are going to be amazing...

I just went over to the Caps site to check out their roster, and saw that McPhee is doing some damage control. There is a video there with his face on it with microphones in his face entitled "No Deal is better than a Bad Deal".
He should have swung a deal for Brett Hedican and Bill Guerin to keep up with the Jones's!

More from McPhee, as it seems, per today's Puck Daddy Headlines:

Sounds like the Caps might be calling Murray on draft day

If he still wants those three guys the Caps are going to hang up pretty quickly, however.

Murray-"oh yeah? remember the last offer i gave you"
McPhee-"yeah?"

Put it this way...I have a dog that I love very much. If someone came along and wanted to buy my dog I would demand at least $100,000 from them...and even then I'm not sure I would sell her. Is that an outrageous fee? Certainly - but it's the minimum amount it would take for me to feel like I was compensated fairly for my loss. Maybe the potential buyer would say "We all had to chuckle in that this guy was asking us to buy him out of debt in one fell swoop" but that's exactly the point. You'd have to give me something extreme for me to give up something I do not want, or need, to give up.
Now, once the Ducks find out whether or not Scott Niedermayer is going to play for them next season things change. Then, due to the salary cap, they will probably be motivated to trade Pronger and the price may go down. But for now I'm glad to hear that Murray was asking for the moon in exchange for a Norris Trophy winner, Hart Trophy winner, Stanley Cup Champion and Hall of Famer all rolled up into one enormous, intimidating package.

I heard that as well and thought the same thing. I just hope this isn't a case of "hear what you want to believe"...

Your dog has sentimental value to you. Pronger does not have sentimental value to the Ducks organization. He's a high quality player, and they want a high quality return for him.
Murray knew he was asking for a huge overpayment for Pronger, and I doubt he seriously expected that deal to get done. It just isn't a realistic trade from McPhee's viewpoint, unless they are going to make a huge push to win the Stanley Cup in the next two seasons. If Murray puts together a more realistic package, one that included one of Alzner or Carlson, it would have still been a great deal for Anaheim. The difference is, it would have been Anaheim selling at the trade deadline. No package that Murray puts together that involves Pronger is going to be anything less than a step backward for Anaheim this season, even if it has real substance moving forward next season and beyond. Murray was clearly unwilling to give up on this season. He just wanted to make sure that if they were going to take such a drastic step backwards for this season, that they were going to get a lot in return - certainly more than Pronger would really be worth. Who knows? McPhee might have been that interested in Pronger as the piece that put them over the top, and he might have been willing to sacrifice the future of the team for just that goal. It wouldn't be the first time.
I'm happy that Murray was willing to ask a lot for Pronger, but I think Murray would be more than willing to give up Pronger. He might not want to give him up, but he certainly seems to feel that if it can have a very positive impact on Anaheim's future that it is a deal that needs to be done.

I couldn't agree more or put it into better words, from your or from Murray's point of view.

When I asked [Philadelphia's GM Paul] Holmgren this afternoon at "breakup" day whether he would look into possibly trading for a former No. 1 (J-S Giguere) would like to be a starter again, he said he would explore "all options."

Trade would probably involve Wolski, Svatos and a pick for him. I wouldn't be overjoyed if we acquired him but I wouldn't be pissed.
