At first glance, before I've entered everything into my formula for predicting the playoffs, here's my picks:

Series A - Boston
Series B - Washington
Series C - Carolina
Series D - Pittsburgh

Series E - Anaheim (Purely a homer pick)
Series F - Detroit
Series G - Vancouver
Series H - Chicago

Dang, I was just about to make the exact same picks heh. I'm very waffley about Detroit and Vancouver though, I think those teams could be ripe for some upsets, and I think the Devs might have finally turned a corner at the end of the season (4 wins in their last 5, including over the Canes). I'd expect those series to go 6-7 games, especially Canucks-Blues and Devils-Canes. And I don't think picking us over the Sharks is purely a homer pick.

Edit: That is,

Series A - Boston
Series B - Washington
Series C - Carolina
Series D - Pittsburgh

Series E - Anaheim
Series F - Detroit
Series G - Vancouver
Series H - Chicago

I can see Columbus upsetting Detroit, but I have serious doubts about STL taking out Vancouver.

My picks excluding the Ducks are:

Series A - Boston (x)
Series B - Washington (x)
Series C - NJD (-)
Series D - Pittsburgh (x)

Series F - Columbus (-)
Series G - Vancouver (x)
Series H - Chicago (x)

After putting each series through my playoff predictions formula here's what I have come up with:

Series A - Boston in five

Series D - Pittsburgh in seven

Series E - San Jose in five
Series F - Detroit in five
Series G - Vancouver in seven
Series H - Chicago in six

ok, my analysis is super simplified.... I have plenty of tiem to expound upon it... but I wanted to make my picks a little less boring... so here they are:

2009 EASTERN CONFERENCE QUARTERFINALS

SERIES A #1 BOSTON vs. #8 MONTREAL
Boston scares me. Simple as that. They are playing a very non-eastern conference style, In fact it is very similar to the 06/07 ducks style. Chara is a beast, Thomas is ridiculous... Markov and Schneider are too banged up to save the Habs.
bos.png in 5

SERIES B #2 WASHINGTON vs. #7 NY RANGERS
When your leading scorer is Nik Antropov... (and most of those points came while he was in Toronto)... you have problems. Then there is that guy... what was his name? I think it rhymes with Rangers-Dont-Have-A-Hopechkin.
wsh.png in 5

SERIES C #3 NEW JERSEY vs. #6 CAROLINA
this is like the Mirror Image battle... kind of like shadow boxing... As good as Broduer is, Cam Ward has suddenly found his game from 2006... Really this one could go either way and will hinge heavily on goaltending... If Cam Ward can withstand 30-40 shots per game... the Caines are golden... then again, Broduer better be on his game...
nj.png in 6

SERIES D #4 PITTSBURGH vs. #5 PHILADELPHIA
1st... this is gonna be one hell of a series!!!
I have a hard time deciding against any team with Crosby, Malkin, Guerin & Kunitz. At the same time... the Flyers are a formidable opponent... this one is a a virtual coin toss.... but Gonchar is a game changer.
pitt.png in 7

2009 WESTERN CONFERENCE QUARTERFINALS

SERIES E #1 SAN JOSE vs. #8 ANAHEIM
Yeah, Yeah... I'm a homer... But I'm a homer with reason.
San Jose has coasted into the playoffs... who can blame them... they completely dominated the entire NHL all season. The Ducks on the Other had have been playing desperate Hockey for a month... the type of Hockey that wins playoff games and playoff series... Three things really will determine this series... Can the Ducks play San Jose without taking a ton of penalties? Can Jonas Hiller handle Playoff pressure? Will officiating be even handed? if the answer to these 3 is yes, Ducks clean house... if not, it could get ugly... I believe the actual answer lies somewhere int he middle.
ducks.gif in 6

SERIES F #2 DETROIT vs. #7 COLUMBUS
This is more gut instinct that anything, but I see Mason absolutely stealing games... while Osgood comes up short... Cinderella Story anyone?
clm.png in 6

SERIES G #3 VANCOUVER vs. #6 ST. LOUIS
Mason is good. Luongo is better. In the end I think this series is going to be decided by one simple thing... the will to win... the desire to overcome.
stl.gif in 6

SERIES H #4 CHICAGO vs. #5 CALGARY
Too close to call... So I will cast my vote in the Hawks favor simply due to depth in net, youthful exuberance and home ice advantage.

so your formula is basically lower seed?

LOL I know you go through more effort than that, but is it possible for your formula to produce an upset prediction? Does it account for intangibles like goaltenders who have histories of playing well/poorly in the playoffs? Teams who often choke? or is it all based on this seasons regular season performance?

I cannot reveal the secrets to my formula, sorry. I will say that it served me well last year but this year...I am not happy with the results. I may have to tweak some things. Picking all favorites, or lower seeds as you point out, is not acceptable.

EDIT: Having reviewed and made slight tweaks to my formula, here are the final predictions:

Series A - Boston in five
Series B - Washington in six
Series C - Carolina in seven
Series D - Pittsburgh in six

Series E - San Jose in six
Series F - Detroit in six
Series G - Vancouver in seven
Series H - Chicago in six

I've only got one upset predicted but that's what I'm going with. Yes, I'm sure this time. I have to believe in my formula which, as I said, has treated me well in the past.

Philadelphia Flyers tough guy Daniel Carcillo was suspended one game Thursday for injuring Pittsburgh Penguins forward Maxime Talbot in Game 1 of the teams' Stanley Cup Playoffs series.

The NHL also fined Flyers coach John Stevens $10,000 for the incident.
...
Here's the description provided by the NHL:

With seven seconds remaining in the third period and the Penguins leading 4-1, Carcillo delivered a blow to the head of Maxime Talbot directly off a face-off. Talbot did not sustain an injury and no penalty was assessed on the play.

"We held a conference call Monday with the general managers and coaches of playoff teams and told them explicitly we would not tolerate attempts by clubs to 'send a message' late in a game when the outcome had been determined," NHL senior executive vice president of hockey operations Colin Campbell said. "Organizations -- players and coaches -- will be held accountable for such actions."

OCR's Al Balderas plucked this out of a Twitter tweet ... It's an old ESPN "Page 2" article:

QUOTE
Real men wear skates

Something to keep in mind the next time you see Vlade Divac lying at Shaq's feet begging for a call: Real men don't flop.

They skate.

That's why I had to laugh when an editor from Page 2 called to ask if I could make a case for the NHL playoffs being better than the NBA playoffs.
...
Of course, we thought we knew which team was going to win the Stanley Cup, too. But then along came Jean-Sebastien Giguere, who single-handedly beat the Red Wings while standing on his head and juggling chainsaws.

"We're just in shock," Red Wings tough guy Darren McCarty said in the aftermath.

Excuse me, but what's this "we" stuff? The Mighty Ducks' sweep was more like business as usual in the NHL playoffs. Fact: Since 1994, the No. 7 seed has beaten the No. 2 seed 12 out of 20 opening-round series.

The New York Rangers head coach could be facing a possible suspension from the National Hockey League for his actions in Game 5's loss to the Washington Capitals.

With 13 minutes 27 seconds remaining in the game, Tortorella was involved in a confrontation with a fan which led him to throw a plastic drinking bottle into the stands, which according to the Washington Post, struck a female fan in the head.

I'm not sure of the order of things happening, but if I pieced together what I saw correctly he'd already asked security to remove a fan and they didn't.
