NHL owners pondering new league

OTTAWA - National Hockey League team owners are now seriously considering forming a new league.

A team owner, who was speaking on condition that his identity was not divulged, says it might come as early as January.

Under the structure of the NHL, it has the ability to shutdown and begin in a new way, if extended negotiations with the players' union fail to reach a deal.

According to the owner, this possibility has become greater following fruitless attempts to reach a deal during contract bargainning with the players' association this week in Ottawa.

Ironically, the players have been considering the same thing.

Or it's all a bluff to scare the other side into getting their act in gear. The NHL already has so little popularity in the media that if it implodes and multiplies into "minor" leagues it could be dealt a mortal blow. Unless that comes first from a prolonged lockout.

i agree Dark Knight ... there are so many other sports that are more popular nowadays than hockey and a new league just might attract interest from like the WB or UPN ... please for the love of hockey, RESOLVE THIS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE cuz i cant take this anymore

I agree with all of you, it's probably just a bluff to put pressure on the other side.

Sure it's most likely a bluff. But if not Hockey Leagues have formed & transformed throughout time. I doubt if there gonna melt down the Stanley Cup to pay there debts. How about E-Bay?

Yet more proof, in case anyone needed it, that Bettman must go. When the owners and players are talking about starting a new league with many of the same dynamics as the NHL, it's because the person in charge is doing a miserable job.

Mighty Mice. If I had time I'd color his uniform eggplant and jade and give him a logo, skates, stick. But I don't have time, so you just have to imagine.
