it hasn't been announced officially yet, they are also in the process of signing Erik Christensen to a one-year deal

Better be at a good price. Didn't he have surgery in the offseason? That could have been affecting his play for a long time.

Since it wasn't a "Qualifying offer"......We know it was for less than 10% more than last season. (Correct me if I'm wrong on that 10%).

Last year was $750k, and a 10% raise would have been $825k.

it may simply be for $750k

Seems fair, he has to prove he can play, Hopefully it was his need for surgery that stunted his play.

if we bring in a legit #2 center, then what do we do with him, ebbett as well?

How many 3rd line centers do we need?

Agreed. I am not happy to hear this. Hopefully he can prove me wrong, but I doubt it. Looks like I have an answer when people ask me who my least favorite Ducks player is.

...Why?

We have no place for him.

He's not on the 1st line. We tried him on the second line and it didn't work. He is in no way a checking line type forward. He isn't physical enough or useful enough for what we use our fourth line for.

He just doesn't mesh with any aspect of this Ducks team...

Ugh.
At least he'll be cheap?

And they don't even have an AHL team to bury him on! I agree, this baffles me. What role could he possibly fill this season?

Do you think this signing gives any insight into Murph's 2nd line center plans?

Does this spell the end of a Koivu type player coming in?

I hope that signing Erik Christensen does not mean that the Ducks are no longer interested in Saku Koivu. IF the Ducks are interested in Koivu at all I am sure they would still be interested and would not view it as either Christensen OR Koivu. Not even Erik Christensen's mother would consider Erik a suitable substitute for Saku Koivu.

That may be an unfair measure since nobody seems to have worked at the second-line center position since AMac was traded.

Given the top-5 forwards the Ducks now have, the center on Teemu's line (especially if Bobby is the other winger) will be counted on more for passing skill than scoring ability.

Personally, I think Marchant could excel in that role, but I wouldn't give up on Christensen there since the need is different now.

Finally, even if this is to just retain his rights and later trade him (a la Sutherby), IMO, the Ducks needed to protect their asset since they gave up a good prospect to get him.

I agree. That's still an if and even if the if is true, they won't be the only one seeing Koivu.

The Ducks don't lose much by signing Christensen, especially if it's a two-way deal.

For starters, I don't think anyone expects him to be healthy to start the season, but correct me if my memory fails. I suspect he'll be this year's Carter if not this year's Miller.

I'm just scratchin me head too....signing Erik makes no sense at all if you plan to bring in a real #2 center. Especially already having Ebbett. So I'm afraid it means Murphs given up on doing that.

I doubt we are going after a second line center now. Bigger question IMO is was Christensen's injury affecting his play and will the surgery help.

I like this move. Christensen comes cheap and is a decent player who has some skill and is great in shootouts.

I'm sure this won't influence our search for a 2nd line center. This is a depth move. In case of injury I'd rather have Christensen on our second line than guys like Miller oder Bodie.

Indeed it seems to have been edited and, for the sake of accuracy, this would be a re-signing wink.gif

Let's put this into perspective folks, that is if it has actually happened. One, he'd be signing for peanuts, probably less than the 750K he made last season. That's puts him the pay range of Ryan Carter and George Parros, in other words 4th liners. Second, he was obviously hampered by his shoulder and wasn't as effective as he should have been. Third, he isn't intended to be a second liner, at least he's not penciled in as one. Most of us have a problem with Ebbett in that spot and he's certainly more effective than Christensen. If Crush has in fact been signed he should be penciled in for the fourth line. Some of you may argue that he isn't "fourth line materal" or what have you. But another complaint we hear a lot is how our fourth line never scores. Having Christensen on in the lineup on the fourth line, making less than 800K is not a bad thing. Plus he does have the upside to do even more than that. This is a low risk move.

As long as we're still shootin for a legit 2nd line center I'm happy.

Good points Joe.

If he can get us 6-7 points by winning us some shootouts, he is worth it..thats it
