Is there an actual high school team in this country with TWO former NHL players as coaches? I know that there are some "high school" teams in Minnesota that are basically colleges (Andy Murray used to coach one of them just before being hired by the Kings and Sidney Crosby went there even though he's Canadian to give you an idea of just how different it is from an actual high school) but that is very impressive! Good for the kids at Junipero Serra and best of luck to them this season.

QUOTE
“It’s an honor and thrill for me to be involved in sharing my passion for ice hockey with the next generation of players, and I’m particularly excited about leading the sport’s growth in Southern California,” said Karpa, who lives in Newport Beach. “We have an outstanding group of scholar-athletes dedicated to their sport and their community.”
...
“My hope is that I can help teach the scholar-athletes not only to a better player on the ice but to be a better person off the ice,” he said. “Many challenges that athletes face in competition help mold their character. He also said he looks forward to working with the goalies.

I've seen Karpa run a handful of practices and, IIRC, a tryout, too. It' looked like a little NHL training camp. He had those boys flying.

They left out my son's coach, Ben Frank who will be coaching for JSera's Jr. Ice Lions Program:

QUOTE
Kelly Askew, RPI, and Ben Frank, University of Toronto, have been named as Co-Head Coaches for the newly formed Junior Ice Lions.

The program is designed to be a highly competitive AA club in development for future JSerra Ice Lions High School teams. The club will compete in SCAHA.

Coach Frank joins the JSerra staff with over 5 years of AA and AAA coaching experience and played College hockey in Canada at the University of Toronto.

In addition to the selection of Coach Askew and Frank, Varsity Head Coaches David Karpa, Leo Fenn and Guy Hebert will be working with the development of the Junior Ice Lions.

In fact, they left out the Jr Ice Lions entirely in the press release.

Karpa is now gone. He got himself into a sticky situation and was either fired or asked to resign

I can't explain specifics, because I don't know all of them, and I'm sure it's not supposed to be talked about, but there was a lot of politics within the Jserra organization and it certainly had an effect on all of the teams. The players didn't particularly like him either

There is also a time commitment issue as he is now the Hockey Director for Athletic Republic

And all my high school had was a barely recognized in-line hockey team.

Looks like Huntington High School was just NOT OK with, cross town rival, Edison having a team in 2011-12 and them not...

They have now announced the formation of a team...

In two years the Ducks high school Hockey league has gone from:

2009-10
JSerra, playing exhibition games against SCAHA teams...

To

2010-11
JSerra
Santa Margarita
Servite
Damien
Orange Lutheran

To

2011-12
JSerra
Santa Margarita
Servite
Damien
Orange Lutheran
Bishop Amat
Edison
Long Beach Prep
Huntington

That's impressive.... originally nay-sayers said it would be 20 years before Ice Hockey became a CIF sport.... I give it 5

Lol actually met Guy today at work. Very nice guy to talk to. Was too chicken to bring up the Karpa situation but I did find out he is still the goalie consultant for JSerra and also they are trying to bring in Mater Dei next year.

Yeah it's great to see the quick growth! Hopefully more southern OC high schools will join in too.

Yeah that's part of it. He took that job while he was still coaching at Jserra, so that caused some questioning

From what I heard, Mater Dei declined.

It's a shame too, because they would likely be far and away the best team due to players that attend that school...

Problem is... The players are too good for high school hockey in so cal and would rather play club

What do you mean? I mean like, why not? Get Loara and Kennedy and Artesia and ...
and ... and ... other schools in the area. C'mon guys and gals, we can't just be gettin'
the catholic schools on board. Ya know?

Edison & Huntington are not catholic schools... they're public.

In three short years, the Ducks’ grass-roots venture has swelled to 11 varsity and junior varsity squads from eight schools. The club announced on Friday that three — Bishop Amat/Upland Christian Academy, Edison and Long Beach Prep — will ice junior varsity squads this season.

In addition, Servite will add a varsity team after it joined the league in 2010 with a JV squad.

I actually found Guy on Facebook with his personal page. I couldnt resist from sending him a message thanking him for being my first pro athlete. Never got anything back but thats okay. smile.gif

As for the MN high school games, yeah... it's flippin huge here. We are starting to get statewide coverage of the games on Fox Sports North now. (They also do the Wild coverage.) Plus in the last few years, they have launched Hockey Day in Minnesota. Each year a new town is picked to host an outdoor festival with three HS games (1 girls, 1 A, 1 AA) and then after those games, the Gopher Mens' team plays, and then the Wild usually are on a West Coast trip that starts at 9 pm. It's like 18 hours of hockey or something like that in February.
