According to Glenn Healy, the former NHL goalie and former director of player affairs with the NHLPA, the NHL is considering changing the names of the annual awards given out each season.

During the weekly Hotstove segment on Hockey Night in Canada, Healy said these were the proposed name changes:

Hart Trophy - Gordie Howe

Art Ross Trophy - Wayne Gretzky

Calder Trophy - Mario Lemieux

Norris Trophy - Bobby Orr

Lady Byng Trophy - Jean Beliveau

Jack Adams Award - Scotty Bowman

If you constantly update the names to suit the century, who would ever go back to the history of the sport to find out who Art Ross or Jack Adams were? For that matter, will they change the Wayne Gretzky award in 2109 to the Sidney Crosby Award? I'm not fond of this. But then I'm a student of history, sports or otherwise.

Excellent points. I'm a history student myself smile.gif partly out of interest, partly because my job requires it, but even if it didn't I'd still read it.

I see the upside, those who dont know who those guys are, will at least have a better idea of what the awards mean. But at the same time tradition is a scary thing to mess with. Im not a big fan of messing with that stuff, I mean if they change the names of those awards then what happens to Lord Stanleys Cup??

Getzky should have an award named after him tho... maybe just a new one

what? are they gonna change Lord Stanley to something at well?

i agree with RGS, it makes sense and it's fitting that there is a trophy with the name of The Great One attached to it, but changing old trophy names?

are they going to change it back? so Teemu is going to be a Lemieux trophy recipient? and Lemieux will be a Lemieux trophy recipient too? wacko.gif or is it going to start anew and last year Mason got Calder and this year, whoever gets it, will get Lemieux?
so now that new guy will not be in the same line with the previous guys, only Lemieux...
isn't it kind of the purpose of it all (aside from rewarding the best) to have a little "club" of very few that share something that other only dream of...

or few years from now a Rookie of the year will talk to one of the past rookies of the year...
"hey dude, i just got Lemieux! so psyched!"
"cool congrats i was a rookie of the year too"
"oh yeah... wait did you get Calder or Lemieux?"
"Calder"
"maaan, you are OLD!" laugh.gif

Don't change the names, but make a new award named after Gretzky for most assists in a season.

I tell you one thing they could change is the "President's Trophy." There's no NHL President, call it the "Commissioner's Trophy" if you want. Or even the "Bettman Trophy." I could see teams tanking on purpose so not to win something named the "Bettman" laugh.gif

What do you think?

I think: Calder Trophy - Mario Lemieux, is a crock of $#|+!!!!!!

If the calder is ever renamed(and it shouldn't be), it should be renamed the Selanne, simply out of respect for what he did his rookie year.

But what do i know? I'm still pissed we lost the old Conference and Division names... sad.gif
