TSN's Ice Chips

QUOTE
goducks1ux5.gif Ryan Getzlaf suffered a cut on his right leg that required several stitches to fix. The injury is not believed to be serious but it could affect Getzlaf's availability for Tuesday's home game against Minnesota, though the center remains hopeful. - Orange County Register

bos.png Bruins left wing Milan Lucic, out since Nov. 25 with a high ankle sprain, is skating and hopes to play as early as the Jan. 1 Winter Classic at Fenway Park, if not soon after. - Boston Globe/Herald

Derek Morris, out since Dec. 18’s shootout loss to Chicago with an undisclosed injury, returned to the ice for practice Saturday morning, and said everything feels OK. - Boston Globe/Herald

buff.png Patrick Kaleta and Chris Butler, out with neck and ankle injuries, respectively, are as close to healthy as they're going to get. They still didn't get to play Saturday. However, Thomas Vanek returned following a three-game absence with an abdominal injury. - Buffalo News

chi.png Cam Barker and Ben Eager returned to the lineup Saturday after missing three and four games, respectively. That good news was offset when Quenneville revealed Kris Versteeg and Niklas Hjalmarsson were unavailable for at least the first leg of the home-and-home with the Predators. The Hawks again recalled left wing Bryan Bickell from Rockford on Saturday. Bickell has one goal and is a plus-3 in 10 games this season. - Chicago Tribune

clm.png The Jackets placed defenceman Marc Methot on the injured list and recalled forward Alexandre Picard from Syracuse of the AHL on Sunday. - TSN

dal.png Dallas was missing captain Brenden Morrow with flu and had flu-stricken goalie Marty Turco, who was supposed to start the game, sitting in the locker room. The Stars also were without Trevor Daley (shoulder) and Mark Fistric (concussion), who remain on injured reserve. - Dallas Morning News

det.png Center Valtteri Filppula returned from the broken wrist he suffered Oct. 29 for Saturday's win over Columbus and forwards Dan Cleary and Henrik Zetterberg, out with shoulder injuries, both were on the ice before the morning skate. Cleary stayed to skate during the team portion as well. And defenseman Brian Rafalski is healthy again after missing the last game because of the flu. - Detroit Free Press

flo.png Rostislav Olesz missed Saturday's practice because of the flu, and coach Pete DeBoer said Olesz was doubtful for Sunday's game. Center Shawn Matthias was recalled from the minors Saturday night. - Miami Herald

Victor Oreskovich and Cory Stillman missed Saturday's practice, as they were flying back from Canada. They arrived late and worked out on the ice together. - Miami Herald

la.png Right wing Justin Williams broke his right leg early in the first period in the Kings' 3-2 loss to Phoenix Coyotes on Saturday night. Coyotes defenseman Ed Jovanovski was spinning off a check of Kings center Anze Kopitar to hit Williams behind the Phoenix net when both players fell onto Williams. "It's not good," Kings coach Terry Murray said. "We'll take him back on the flight with us tonight, have the team doctors look at him and get the word out." - L/A/ Daily News

The Kings activated right wings Wayne Simmonds and Brandon Segal from injured reserve, but placed center Jarret Stoll on injured reserve because of a groin injury. - L.A. Daily News

min.png With 8:51 remaining in the third, forward Chuck Kobasew collided knee-on-knee with the Blues' Keith Tkachuk and left the ice favoring his left leg. Richards confirmed it is a knee injury but did not know specifics, saying only, "It doesn't sound good." - Star Tribune

Forward Petr Sykora, out since suffering a concussion Nov. 7 participated in the Wild's morning skate Saturday but did not play against the Blues, missing his 22nd consecutive game. Todd Richards did not rule out the chance Sykora could travel with the team for back-to-back games in California, beginning Monday in Los Angeles. - Star Tribune

mon.png Jacques Martin said yesterday that right-winger Brian Gionta and defenceman Roman Hamrlik will return to the lineup on this trip and could play as early as Monday. - Montreal Gazette

nsh.png The Predators began the process of trying to fill the role of Jerred Smithson on Saturday. Smithson will be out for at least one month with a broken left hand. Saturday, Nashville recalled Andreas Thuresson from Milwaukee of the American Hockey League to help fill the void. - The Tennessean

nj.png David Clarkson skated with the team in Newark but was not activated for last night's game in Washington. However, he soon will be, coach Jacques Lemaire said. - Star Ledger

Center Dainius Zubrus (fractured right kneecap) and defenseman Paul Martin (fractured left forearm) remain out, Zubrus is expected to start skating next week. - Bergen Record

ott.png Nick Foligno (knee) skated with the team on Sunday. Head coach Cory Clouston hopes to have him back in 4-5 days. Absent from Sunday's skate was Jason Spezza (knee) and Daniel Alfredsson (shoulder). Alfredsson is expected to miss the next four-to-six weeks with a separated shoulder. - TSN

phi: Brian Boucher remained sidelined with a lacerated ring finger and was listed as day to day. Boucher practiced with the team yesterday morning but still experienced soreness. During pregame warm-ups, Ryan Parent suffered back spasms, which had affected him slightly during the morning skate, so he did not play last night. That left the team with just five defensemen. Parent is listed as day to day. Danny Syvret was recalled from the AHL's Phantoms for tonight's game on Long Island. - Philadelphia Inquirer

pitt.png Defenseman Mark Eaton showed no signs of his lower-body injury during a hard practice at Southpointe last night. He has missed two straight games after leaving a win at Buffalo on Dec. 19 with a lower-body injury. If Eaton cannot play tonight against the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Penguins will dress defenseman Martin Skoula. - Tribune Review

The Penguins are expected to resume talks with Gonchar's agent, JP Barry, early next week. Gonchar can become an unrestricted free agent July 1, though he is open to signing an extension during the season. The club and Barry were close on neither term nor salary during early season discussions. - Tribune Review

tmp.png Injuries to C Jeff Halpern and LW Todd Fedoruk forced the two onto the injured reserve list after Lightning coach Rick Tocchet said each could miss at least two weeks with unspecified "lower body" injuries suffered Wednesday against Philadelphia. The moves were made retroactive to Wednesday, meaning each are eligible to come off before the Jan. 2 game against Pittsburgh. In addition, D Matt Walker was placed on injured reserve with a lower body injury suffered Dec. 18 in St. Louis. With the pair of forwards out of the lineup, D Mike Lundin was recalled from Norfolk of the American Hockey League, while David Hale was moved from defense to play on the fourth line. - Tampa Tribune

tml.png The Leafs might have injured Viktor Stalberg back in the lineup when they face the Penguins at Pittsburgh on Sunday night. He's has been out two games with what is believed to be a shoulder injury. - Toronto Star

van.png Ryan Johnson will not make the upcoming road trip for Vancouver. Head coach Alain Vigneault says he will have a CT scan on his foot on Monday. The team has no plans to call up another forward for now as they have 12 healthy forwards. - TSN

wsh.png Semyon Varlamov did not participate in the morning skate Wednesday but practiced on his own. The rookie goalie, who suffered a strained groin muscle on Dec. 7, remains on target to return next week. Brian Pothier (bruised ribs) did not take the morning skate, one day after leaving practice early. Bruce Boudreau said he had cold-like symptoms. Boyd Gordon (strained back) is likely going to be assigned to the American Hockey League’s Hershey Bears this weekend on a conditioning stint, Boudreau said. - Washington Post
