On October 9, 1993, the first all-Florida regular season game was played in NHL history as the expansion Florida Panthers defeated the two-year-old Tampa Bay Lightning 2-0 before 27,227 fans at the Thunder Dome. John Vanbiesbrouck recorded the shutout, and Scott Levins and Tom Fitzgerald scored for the Panthers.

On October 5, 2008, goaltender Olaf Kolzig appeared in the 712th game of his NHL career, and first with the Tampa Bay Lightning, making 38 saves ina 2-1 loss against the New York Rangers at the O2 Arena in Prague, Czech Republic. Kozig spent the first 15 seasons and 711 games of his career with the Washington Capitals.

On February 26, 2008, the Edmonton Oilers broke the NHL record for regular season shootout wins in a season by defeating Detroit 4-3 at Rexall Place. It was the 13th victory in 16 shootouts, breaking Dallas' mark of 12 (12-1) victories set in 2005-06. Robert Nilsson scored the game deciding goal.

On October 10, 2002, Rick Nash of the Columbus Blue Jackets scored a goal in his NHL debut, a season opening 2-1 victory against the Chicago Blackhawks at Nationwide Arena. He scored against goaltender Jocelyn Thibault. Nash became the eighth No. 1 overall draft pick to score in his NHL debut.

On June 6, 2007, the Anaheim Ducks won the first Stanley Cup title in franchise history with a 6-2 victory against the Ottawa Senators in Game 5 before 17,372 fans at the Honda Center. Travis Moen scored twice, and Andy McDonald, Rob Niedermayer, Francois Beauchemin and Corey Perry added goals. Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 11 saves, including stopping Antoine Vermette on a penalty shot.

On October 15, 2008, Fabian Brunnstrom became the third player in NHL history to record a hat trick in his NHL debut, leading the Dallas Stars to a 6-4 victory against the Nashville Predators before a crowd of 16,899 at American Airlines Center. He scored his third goal against goaltender Dan Ellis at 16:35 of the third period with assists from Brad Richards and Nicklas Grossman.
