TSN's Ice Chips
Defenceman Mark Popovic took part in the team's morning skate Thursday, his first practice with the team since breaking his foot in mid-December. Popovic was cleared by doctors following Thursday's practice and could be ready for game action in a week. Popovic, Boris Valabik and Nik Antropov (hip) were scratched Thursday. - Atlanta Journal Constitution
Marc Savard is believed to have injured his knee last night and will have an MRI today. The early prognosis (before the MRI) is that Savard will be out 2-3 weeks, according to a source. - TSN
The team recalled Trent Whitfield from Providence on an emergency basis; he will skate with the team at today's practice in Wilmington. - Team Release

The Stars have lost centre Mike Ribeiro for 4-6 weeks with a throat injury. Ribeiro received an accidental high stick Wednesday from Rangers forward Christopher Higgins and stayed over in New York for a procedure and observation. The Wings saw Henrik Zetterberg and Dan Cleary return from injuries the same night Tomas Holmstrom began a three- to four-week absence because of a non-displaced fracture in his foot. Holmstrom flew home to Detroit on Thursday morning. While he now joins an injured group that already included Johan Franzen (knee), Niklas Kronwall (knee), Jason Williams (fibula) and Jonathan Ericsson (knee.
