I can not understand Anaheim's loyalty to KDOC Channel 56. I have a subscription to DirectTV and Center Ice and on home games I have to endure the absolutely rotten picture of KDOC on 56. I don't know about all of you but watching Ducks hockey on this channel is useless!! Following the puck is just not possible. How can a local channel like this have the worst picture ever for watching hockey. If I switch to a Kings game on network TV -- the picture in not necessarily HD, but at least it is a clean broadcast.

WTF? Why are we watching a broadcast station that still runs Cheers and Star Trek as headliner shows?

rolleyes.gif Its the only option they have since FSN/Prime Ticket agreed with the Clippers to broadcast all of their games on cable. That left the Ducks with less games on Prime Ticket. KDOC is the only option since KTLA, KCOP, and KCAL could care less about hockey. I'd rather have the Ducks on KDOC then not having them on tv at all. It sucks watching the games on KDOC but you gotta deal with it.

The last game the broadcast kept blanking in and out and Mr. B said "Quality all around, eh?"

This complaint would be best directed at Bob Wagner (bwagner@anaheimducks.com) Senior Vice President /Chief Marketing Officer for the Ducks.

know what you mean but im just happy when games are on....put i am also kind of lucky that since im out of state and have CI i dont have to deal with black outs so i have only had 1 game not on TV this year and like 5 that are not in HD....for example, im assuming this is on KDOC for you guys who are local and if you have CI the st. louis feed is blacked out (i think that is how it was when i lived down there) but i get to watch the STL feed which is in HD...i do understand the frustration though with a crappy feed....

....a little OT but also kind of fits, i was reading in SI like a month ago about how the NHL is growing and 1 of the 3 main reasons for that is hockey in HD tops all other sports

KDOC typically looks a lot better over the air than after the cable/dish companies compress their broadcast

but compressed KDOC is better than no TV

Ill take it over nothing. If we could get a better broadcaster to give us the game that would be awesome but the Kings have the other FNS channel and then you have the clippers and other sports who are taking up the other slots. Until the NHL is cool with ESPN again or can convince other channels to put Hockey on their stations we have no choice other than nothing at all.

I like Bob Miller, he's certainly better than Ahlers and Hayward.

Not to go off topic too much, but Miller? Half the time he doesn't even know the names of the players on the other team.

As for KDOC, aside from the picture, it's okay.

And nobody better be talking smack on Star Trek or Cheers. That's my childhood, you're talking about.

agree...Bob Miller is a Hall of Fame broadcaster...but for his work in the 60s/70's/80's and maybe 90's...in the last 10 or 12 years he's not the same broadcaster he once was, and has become as bad a home team hack as ANY play-by-play guy out there...it's sad really

and I think part of the reason KDOC looks worse this year is most of the PSN games are in HD now...and on my cable I don't think KDOC looks much different than other over the air/non-HD broadcast...but that seems to vary a lot from cable system to cable system

Yes, I too have problems over-looking Miller's call of Bobby's hat-trick goal, but he's still a good broadcaster.

Listening to him a bit last night when some Wings fan climbed into the rafters of Joe Louis was hilarious.

"If he falls on the ice, it'll be too many men" is miles better than "Lookout cookout" or "Ladies tees".

Miles better.

Don't get me wrong, a lot of the time he's good. I agree, miles ahead of Ahlers. But he just seems really slow at times, and almost as if he hasn't watched a game of hockey, outside of the Kings, since the 80s.

Anyway, one thing I really like about KDOC is the music. I get sick of that Fox Sports jingle.

The Ducks will be broadcasting the games on KDOC this season in HD. Great news right?!?! Well yes but...

Should warn people ahead of time even though KDOC will broadcast in HD, as last season DIRECT TV , DISH and TIMEWARNER all DID NOT carry KDOC in HD. Looks like TW has now added it "channel 406" but DT and Dish customer need to check their listings. If they still do not carry KDOCHD fans will need to buy a $20-$30 set of rabbit ears to see the HD broadcast. If you want to record the games, at least with Direct TV you can run the rabbit ears through their receivers. Just an FYI to the faithful since I know come October people will be up in arms with their providers.

** I added this to this thread. I actually love the fact KDOC get some games and look forward to the HD broadcast.

I'm happy so long as they don't go back to that lame rink-side idea.

I hope someone lost their job over that.

Is it because they are so bad that you would rather pick up the Center Ice feed? Odd that you could as I thought Center Ice would be blocked out for local games, and it would be really weird if SB wasn't considered "local" for Ducks Center Ice games but San Diego was.

I like what KDOC is doing, I remember back when the games seemed like they were hardly on and even thought the broadcast quality isn't the best KDOC is getting games on all around free of charge and they have actually made it a point to get games late in the season on the air that have meaning for the playoff chases. I remember the three they added in 2006 when we were charging towards our spot and that game they aired against Vancouver was the most exciting televised game I saw all regular season.

Awesome news! Got a link to the announcement? Even if DirectTV/Dish don't add the HD channel, they will downsample the HD feed and broadcast that on the SD channel. It should definitely improve the picture and bring it up to FSN SD standards.

As for people asking about the Duck's "loyalty" to KCRAP (a name I will no longer use if they really do broadcast games in HD), I think it has something to do with the fact that Samueli owns the channel.
Per Wiki: "On April 4, 2006, Bert Ellis along with Anaheim Ducks owners Henry Samueli and his wife Susan bought KDOC-TV for $149.5 million from Golden Orange Broadcasting. The sale closed in July 2006"

You won't be disappointed.

When I think HD Television, I think hockey. It was made for hockey, and I think it might well be the best sport for it. I could see Golf being a good one too, but since I don't watch golf... I've never had an issue following the puck(probably because I watch the players, not the puck) but the advantages of HD for the sport of hockey are undeniable. Not only do you get to see the game in widescreen, so you can see more of the ice, which lets you see plays develop far better, but the additional resolution is amazing.

I hate watching KDOC because I don't get it in HD. That's my only real issue with KDOC. I can live with the cheap graphics, because who cares about that? But the channel seems to have poor resolution even by typical cable or satellite standards. Before I got an HDTV it was easy to notice the difference between FSN and KDOC, and that's saying something. If they go HD, I'll have zero issues with the channel.

You'll also get more enjoyment in watching television and movies in general. Movies, TV shows(even older ones will have a slight improvement), hell, everything is better with HDTV. Well, except for the acting, directing, and the plot. Not much HD can do about that. If it's crap, it's crap. smile.gif I didn't think it would make a big difference, but I find myself rarely ever straying away from HD channels anymore. If you can afford it, I'd highly recommend it.
