James Wisniewski: Is he worth re-signing?

What the hell happened to him? For example, in this very thread, L&G (quite properly at the time) brought up the fact that Wiz might be getting injuries because he plays too big for his body. When he came here he was banging on everyone, fighting for every puck. Mean, a bad attitude and nasty. Not to mention solid defensively and adequate on the point. Looked like a much better Francois Beauchemin. Looked to me like he had the potential to be a very very sold stay at home guy who would protect our weaker forwards and add something on offense.
Well he's had a big goal or two. The two shootout winners. But other than that, he's SUCKED.
Here's my theory: He's got a one year deal and he isn't gonna get hurt.

Could be true.
Now that Whitney is gone Wiz is easily the new whipping boy around these parts.

I think it's a combination of fear of injury...
and fear of suspension.
He was a bruiser to start the year too... he tapered off dramatically after his suspension for the hit on Doan.

For as much as I like Wiz and think he's got intangibles beyond his physical skills, I'll have to agree that committing that much to him would be a gamble.
I think it's high time that we relied on at least a couple of our young d-men to contribute not only in ice time, but to saving the team some Cap room with their ELC's. That's been an ingredient to a lot of the success in the NHL since the lockout, including our Cup win with a potent second line that was a bargain.

Not a prob. I thought you might have seen something, but didn't post it because you saw this and thought somebody had beat you to it.
And where has TheJoeMan been? Anybody heard from him, or see him on other boards? Very good Ducks fan MIA here...

With the output he's putting up, no way he gets that for a borderline no. 4 d-man.

Indeed. I like the Wiz. I think he's a good calibre defenseman. I just don't think he's playing with heart, as it is the same with half the players on this team. The proof is in the pudding. Over the last 3 games, they should have scraped up at the least, 4 points. Not just 1. If you were to ask me why, I wouldn't be able to tell you for sure. It would be purely speculation. Besides we need all the good players we can get or keep, as we are rapidly approaching the eve of Teemu Selanne and Scott Niedermayer's departure from the hockey world; more important, this team.
I think they should re-sign the Wiz. As for how long and how much, well I think that's best left up to him and the front-office.

Agreed. I hope Bob Murray is able to trade Wisniewski this summer to a team that is interested in overpaying for a #4 defenseman.

For whatever reason, Wiz seems to have backed off for the majority of this season. I don't care if it's cause he's trying to avoid injury, if he's mad at Carlyle, if he's only doing it cause everyone else is doing it. The physical aspect of his game is gone.
So he's an average (maybe even on the small) sized dman with average speed and average offense ... and, at best an erratic desire to be physical.
He can be someone else's #2 or #3 or even #4 Dman next year.

Visnovsky/Eminger
Festerling/Sbisa
Mikkelson/Mitera
It would be cheaper, get the same results on the ice and would give some valuable ice time to some young players.

I agree. At some point, we need to be effective with the draft as a resource pool, rather than continue to bring in recycles and castoffs. CHI, for example, is not in the place they are because they built their defense through trades and free agency.
And at some point we need to realize that effective play from our blueliners on both ends of the ice is only achieved when the forwards are doing the same. Without any back-pressure in our end from all of our forwards working their butts off in the d-zone as well, the defense will continue to be porous.

They should have done that this year. They claimed they didn't want to "ruin" Sbisa the way that LA and Atlanta have "ruined" Johnson, Doughty, and Bogosian...
I'd like to see them do that, with Niedermayer back for one more year at about $5 mil. But that's not likely.
Niedermayer/Sbisa
Visnovsky/Festerling
Mikkelson/Mitera
Then have:
Beleskey/Getz/Perry
Blake/FA/Ryan
Sharp/Carter/Sexton
Bodie/Chipchura/Brown

Eminger is under contract for next year so I think he has to fit in there somewhere.
