Defenceman Andrei Markov has undergone knee surgery and will not return to the Canadiens' lineup during the playoffs, the team announced on Wednesday. He had a successful procedure to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. Markov was hit by the Penguins' Matt Cooke in the opening minutes of Game 1 of their semifinal series. Markov is expected to be out for six months. Just seven players - goaltender Carey Price along with skaters Sergei Kostitsyn, Benoit Pouliot, Mathieu Darche, Glen Metropolit, Ryan O'Byrne and Ben Maxwell - participated in an optional skate on Wednesday. The team had a meeting that lasted more than 45 minutes.

Jeff Carter (toe) was skating again on Thursday, but isn't ready to return to the lineup just yet. ''[Carter] improves everyday,'' Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said regarding Carter. ''He's not ready for tonight but possibly later in the series for sure.'' Flyers head coach Peter Laviolette said he wouldn't comment on Caretr's health, that's up to Holmgren, but said "Jeff looked good on the ice, was skating, shooting, and passing. He looked good." - TSN
Manny Malhotra skated on wing instead of centre at Thursday's practice. - TSN

Shift of the Game: Jacques Martin pleaded with the Canadiens to crash the net more frequently, and his team did just that on Thursday night. It was evident when Tom Pyatt raced to the crease, beat out Flyers defenseman Matt Carle to a loose puck and then poked it over the line at 16:52 of the first period to give Montreal a 2-0 lead.

Well... they're bound to win a game or two. No team is capable of sweeping play-off games like The Anaheim Mighty Ducks did in 2003.
