I agree with all of that, but I don't like it because it fills in one more spot without making any changes, or upgrades, to the defense. As I posted in the rumors thread:
Under Contract:
Visnovsky
Eminger
Brookbank
Festerling
Sbisa
Oystrick
RFA:
Wisniewski
Mikkelson
UFA:
Niedermayer
Ward
Assume that Ward is gone and that Niedermayer and Wisniewski return. That gives the Ducks eight defenseman under contract, five of which are on a one-way deal. With Sbisa, Festerling and Mikkelson all in the picture it begins to look as though Bob Murray would be satisfied if the Ducks defense in October is essentially the same defense it had in April. That would not be a good thing, in my opinion.
I like Brookbank on the third pairing.
I do not like the lack of change I am seeing on the Ducks blueline.

Couldn't have said it better myself. We need to get better on D. A full season of Lubo will help that cause, but I don't think that's enough change to mend our ailments back there.

Then again, I have called for his head on a silver plate for a year and a half now...

If the only change to the defense that Murray makes this summer is to replace Ward with Sbisa then he should be fired as well. It's a well known fact that the Ducks need to upgrade their defense and it's not a slight upgrade that is needed - it's a significant one.

I'm not saying what I think he's worth...just guessing what I think Bob does.
If I were to sign the guy as a 5/6 it would be 900k max, but I think they'll fork out 1.2....hope not though.

Not what we need AT ALL right now. Brookbank played pretty well for us last year down the stretch but seriously this isnt helping our weak blue line. Im surprised he sign for as little as he did, rumors were he wanted to be a million dollar man but that must mean he wasnt getting offers for what he wanted.
Not happy with this at all. Bob your leash just got shorter...

Agree on all counts....
The bottom 2 D-men are NOT going to be all-stars. Brookbank fills that role quite well, and at $750k, he is priced right.
I'm willing to wait on what our top 4 looks like. Visnovsky played as a significant upgrade to Whitney, and I'm hopeful Scotty comes back. Add one quality free agent, (find a new home for Eminger and/or Festerling), let Mikkelson and Sbisa work for a spot, and I think we have a defense that will work.

I would think with a 750k signing of Brookbank (who allegedly rejected earlier offers) lengthens his leash a bit. Brookbank is a suitable 6th defender and I don't expect him to be anything more. He's certainly not getting paid for anything more
Like others, I saw this signing going over $1mil. I'm glad it didn't and applaud Murray for a contract that could have been very upsetting. What I mean by that is I was expecting closer to double what Brookbank actually got. Compare ~$1.2mil to $750k and you'll be smiles, too

dont get me wrong i am happy with the fact that its only 750k but unhappy that he was signed wityh all the dead weight we have on the blue line. we need a #1 really bad and we still have Eminger and festerling under contract.
