The Ducks will host the fourth annual Anaheim Ducks West Coast Prospects Camp at THE RINKS – Anaheim ICE from June 18-20. The invitation-only camp brings together the top youth talent from Southern California, giving players an opportunity to showcase their skills before premier university and major junior league scouting staffs.

Games begin at Anaheim ICE on Friday at 3 p.m. and are free of charge to the general public. A total of 16 games will be played throughout the weekend on the Anaheim ICE NHL and Olympic rinks, concluding on Sunday at 10:30 a.m.

Beth Assaf of Rancho Cucamonga has the same reminder for her 15-year-old son, Basel, every time she drops him off at hockey practice in Monrovia or at a game in Anaheim.

"If you give 90 percent," she said, "I'm not driving you tomorrow."

Welcome to the world of youth hockey in Southern California, where intense commutes and hyper-intense dedication are the cultural norms. Assaf was among 124 hopefuls who came from as far north as Santa Barbara, and as far south as San Diego, to play in a three-day West Coast prospects camp hosted by the Ducks at their Anaheim ICE practice facility this weekend.

For years such a gathering might have been considered a novelty, but major junior and NCAA Division I college coaches now are being forced to pay attention. More than 20 were in attendance to scout players aged 13-17 at the fourth installment of the annual camp.
