as per icemancometh on twitter:

QUOTE
icemancometh Ducks to announce hiring of former NHLer Mike Foligno as an assistant coach later on today. Newell Brown's contract was not renewed.

Not sure how to react to this.... Best wishes to Newell in his career.

Thoughts?

Sad.

I liked Newell.

We'll see what Foligno brings to the table.

QUOTE
And it was in Buffalo that Mike achieved the greatest success. He stayed there for 10-seasons and was extremely popular. A testament to this was that he won the Frank Eddolls Memorial Trophy five years in a row, given to Buffalo's most popular player.

People in Buffalo loved his never-say-die attitude on the ice. He was tough, mean and played hard every night and never complained. Mike was the ultimate professional in everything he did on the ice. He also became known for his scoring ceremony. He always used to make a high jump in the air after he scored a goal...He had the opportunity to jump 370 times in his career. Mike was a steady goal scorer and cracked the 40-goal barrier once, 30-plus goals four times and 20-plus goals five times. In total surpassed the 20 goal mark a total of ten times in his NHL career.

The first step toward firing the head coach is often the firing, or dismissal, of his assistants. It's clear that the Ducks are not happy with the coaching staff and this is their first attempt to try to fix it. We'll see if it works. If it doesn't, though, expect more changes.

I liked Newell but there were some obvious issues on the coaching staff. Looks like they are slowly trying to fix this issue and starting from the outside and working there way in to RC if its needed. Sometimes a shake up is a good thing for a team and for a staff, lets see what he can bring to the ice.

Goodluck in your future Newell.
Welcome to the Anaheim Ducks Mike.

exactly.

Also, his son Nick is an RFA... and I don't know about you, but Nick has always seemed to be a Ducks style player. being described in the past as "having a bit of sandpaper to him"

this is clearly a warning shot across the bow of the SS Carlyle.

Now to see if he notices

The Ducks have enough third/fourth line forwards. He'd be a nice fit but the timing is not right and there's simply no place for him.

How are you guys so sure this isn't a Randy Carlyle hire?

Because I liked Newell Brown, but I guess it's just a hint that the entire coaching staff is going to receive quite a change. I don't know much about Mike Foligno but I hope he serves the role well. (And by saying "That's crap" I meant it's crap that they fired Brown, not that they hired Foligno, seeing as I don't know much about him, haha. Just wanted to clarify that).
Perhaps I'm just a creature of habit.

That's an excellent point. Not sure why I never even considered that.

Listen, I don't know one way or the other, but most NHL head coaches pick their own staff, I think.

because, As I recall, Randy does not do the hiring in Anaheim.

he may have been consulted, but it was not his decision to make.

It's possible but given the way that the team performed this year and the heat on RC to do better next year I would say this looks more like a warning shot.

It's an interesting thought, but I don't think Carlyle is in the position to be making decisions on what new coaching staff he wants. This is speculative because I assume that Carlyle is pretty much in the hot seat right now. I don't think someone in the hot seat is allowed to have the choice of re-tooling his coaching staff, but I could be wrong on both those assumptions.

Either way, good point.
