Today's waivers: Oystrick (ANA), Moreau, Nilsson, O'Sullivan (EDM), Fedoruk (TB), Brashear, Rissmiller, Voros (NYR). All buyout eligible.

Oystrick becomes buyout eligible given that he clears waivers

Seriously?!? I just ordered my Oystrick jersey as well. Damn the luck.

I didn't think it was possible but the Ducks defense has actually gotten worse today than it was yesterday. The Ducks now have the following defenseman under contract:

Visnovsky
Eminger
Brookbank
Festerling
Sbisa

That's it. crazy.gif Bob Murray, go to work my man. I'd sure like to see some names added to the Ducks defense rather than subtracted from it.

Oyster boy wasnt a huge loss, in fact id say no loss at all. Looks like he is making room here which could be a good sign, but we will have to see.

Making room? Oystrick had one year left on his contract for a whopping $563,750 according to CapGeek.com. I can't imagine that salary was preventing the Ducks from doing...anything.

That's a wee bit perplexing!

I figured he was penciled in as the "cheap" 7th d-man who would keep the pressbox seat warm this year. hmm.gif

Guess they weren't impressed with him at the end of last year....

If we want to be optimists, hope this means "the plan" looks better than that....

I wasnt thinking $$, I was more thinking a roster spot, but then again I believe he was on a 2 way contract... eh maybe they didnt see potential for him

Festerling, Eminger, Brookbank will all have an opportunity for that seat I believe

Wrong deal:

QUOTE
2010/03/01 Anaheim Ducks traded Evgeny Artyukhin to the Atlanta Thrashers for Nathan Oystrick and a conditional draft choice in 2011.

Link

But, it really is still perplexing. Arty's contract would have expired this year, and we're stuck buying out Oystrick's $550k or so....

Added: Just realized it was Miller for Artyukhin, so I understand your point....Apologies.

I don't get the point of this at all. The guy had one year left on a very cheap contract and he had a two-way contract which means the Ducks could have left him in Syracuse all year if they wanted to. Why pay the guy $140,000 in each of the next two years to NOT play for you?

According to CapGeek, this final year on his contract was actually a one-way. (Not that it should make us feel much better).

Here are the numbers from CapGeek:

QUOTE
NATHAN OYSTRICK BUYOUT FROM CAPGEEK.COM
2010-2011: $197,083
2011-2012: $183,333

It's really peanuts as far as money goes. Might even be less than what Arty would have made in the last couple of months last year(?)

But it still smells like another player in a long line that we picked up that just didn't work....which is the distressing part.

Reasons we should keep kim:
Uhh, hes a Regina born player....
and, he uh, could add depth?

Reasons we should drop him:
Uhhh, won't exactly break the bank to drop him... Call it about $200,000 a year... Really isn't that big on the sheets. Cap this year is 59.4. Drop in the bucket. Salary cap will raise next year, making the drop even smaller.
Clearing roster space?

Basically, I don't care lol...

Im more concerned about our top 4... saving 300,000 to 400,000 isnt exactly going to make or break our defense or a signing. (Unless the dude we are trying to sign says he hates this guy and won't play for the team unless we dump him... HEY!!! Maybe thats why we dropped him).

Our D is scary good (ahem sarcasm).
Visnovsky
(then it drops a big level)
Emminger
Sbisa
Festerling
Brookbank
Possibly Mikkelson, Fowler.

If he is indeed on a one way contract this year this could be the Ducks way of sending him down to AHL and keeping him there, instead of buying him out... (I believe)

True. But it would be a strange coincidence to waive him on the last day that buyouts are possible, and without him having a chance to compete for a spot on the team, (even if only for the 7th spot).

Funny that the actual savings from buying him out is a little less than $170,000. I'm guessing it's more in line of "giving him an opportunity" to find another NHL job....

This is just clearing a spot for some of the young guys. We have so many prospects with potential that need to start getting either a feel for the NHL, regular time or be traded out, that Oyster just wasn't needed.

It's odd to me that amidst all the speculation of which prospects could be added to the blue line next season, Mitera is excluded. Mitera had a very solid year based upon reports that I've heard about him, especially considering all that he had to overcome last season (injury, lack of AHL affiliate). If I was a betting man, I'd put some money on Mitera getting a look this season, based on his size and conservative playing style.

I won't be surprised at all to see two of our promising D prospects make the team this season, full time. It's very unrealistic to believe that Murray is going to be able to go out and sign 3 defenseman. IMO, three of Mitera, Sbisa, Fowler, Festerling, Mikkelson and Clark will make the team next season. My bet would be on Sbisa Making the top-4, Mitera on the bottom pair and Mikkelson or Festerling being the 7th man.

Vis-FA/trade
Sbisa-Wiz/Trade (I'm thinking Wiz is kept on a 1 year arbitration deal)
Mitera-Brookbank

Mikkelson/Festerling

This D-corp could be disastrous or it could be a homerun, obviously depending on the FA signing or traded defenseman and How well Mitera and especially Sbisa play. I just think it's unrealistic to expect Murray to sign 2 or 3 free agent d-men, when from everything I've seen, he does not like to overpay free agents and will seemingly only make a trade if the value is in his favor.

I think our defensive is going to really rely on Sbisa to step up this season and take a top-4 role and for one of our other prospects, such as Mitera, to make a positive impact in a lesser role.

Edit: forgot about Emminger, so he'd likely either be traded or take the 7th spot. I just don't see him surviving through training camp, since he really brings nothing positive to the team.

I appreciate the insight, and I think you make some great points, but what's the harm in keeping Oystrick and playing him in the AHL as an insurance policy for injuries? The guy has some NHL experience (56 games) and if all he did was play in Syracuse all season...so what? I get the idea of clearing room for him on the roster but it's not like the Ducks are bursting at the seams with defenseman right now.

Maybe he will be, we'll get a better indication in the next few days. As of right now, we have a logjam of defensive prospects trying to get playing time in the AHL and NHL. There's only so many minutes to go around and Oyster just isn't part of this team's future. Another defenseman that will be AHL eligible net season is Stefan Warg, I'm not sure of the Ducks or his intentions for next season, but he's another intriguing prospect who looked good in camp last season.

He wouldnt have had to move him to make room for one player. No telling what the method is here or what is to come, BM has been awfully quiet so we will just have to wait and see.
