Oh man, that guy was an institution in DET and CHI, as one of the Bruise Brothers. Probably the toughest guy to ever play the game that had bona fide skills on the NHL level, and wasn't there primarily because he could fight. He scored over 60 points in a season at least once, IIRC.

May his family and friends find comfort in this difficult time, and may Bob rest in peace.

QUOTE
"Probert’s best year was the 1987-88 season, when he scored 29 goals, accumulated 398 penalty minutes and played in the all-star game."

Shocking, but not really considering the amount of substance abuse he put his body through. Tragic loss.

Family to publish Probert's memoir

QUOTE
The family of Bob Probert has decided to go ahead with a memoir the longtime NHL enforcer was working on prior to his death. Tough Guy, due to be published Oct. 26, will recount his career with the Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Blackhawks when he was one of the most feared players in the game, and also delve into his off-ice troubles.

Bob Probert's Brain Donated to Science

QUOTE
The family of Bob Probert donated the brain of the former NHL tough guy to a group of researchers at Boston University who have studied the link between head trauma and debilitating heath effects in football players and boxers...

... the university has received three brains of former hockey players. Citing privacy policies, Nowinski said he could only release the identity of one: former NHL player Reggie Fleming, who died in July 2009 at age 73.

Researchers in December disclosed that Fleming, who had suffered through cognitive decline and eventually dementia, died of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a progressive degenerative brain disease caused by repetitive head trauma. Like Probert, Fleming was an enforcer during his 12 seasons in the NHL and two in the World Hockey Association...

Fantastic gift from the Probert family.

This could help make hockey safer.

I agree.

Hopefully, they'll make any hit to the head a 5 minute penalty.
