I am looking for my first laptop and wanted to see what everybody thought would be the best one that would be about under $600. I've been looking at Dell's but dont know if theres anything better.

I have had a Dell laptop for 4 years and other than replacing the battery I have had no problems.

If you are looking for a deal I suggest checking out http://www.techbargains.com/. They always have good links to pretty sweet deals for laptops.

As a Desktop technician I would recommend a Dell. I have had 3 myself and have supported companies of 1000 Dell PCs and laptops, you wont have very many issues.

Acer's are good, havent spent as much time on them but I have heard some good things from other techs.

Just for affordability and deals and customer service, I prefer Dell. They put out the best product for the price.

I've had Dell's laptops for a decade and have an Acer Aspire One netbook, which I use for travel. Dell's are excellent laptops and my Acer is going on 2 years of use and has shown no problems.

I like my HP tablet and my brother likes his HP laptop.

When you do narrow it down to a model, do a search for that model to see if people have a lot of problems with it. It may be a good brand but they all still put out a problem filled dud(heat issues, bad layout etc) every now and then.

Also if you are going to carry it around don't forget to think about weight, if it is too heavy you will end up just leaving it at home and not using it as much.

Not sure on that particular model, but I got my Dell Studio XPS 1640 about 8 months ish ago. Love it. Was a little pricey, but dell has one thing going for it, their warranties.

I recomend you get complete care for a few years.... I have it on mine, it covers almost everything, including liquid exposure... In my case sprite, and my then only 4 month old laptop. It cost me about 450, but I upgraded my warranty to the 4 year complete care package....

oh with all that i've heard about Dell customer service around school and among my friends i will never come close to one of those...

i my self have Acer. it's pretty ancient. almost 4 yrs old and the USBs don't work. none of them. and let's face it: laptop that has no way of getting info in and out except burning it on a disk or uploading to a sharing site is an excuse for a device.... and it really heats up. battery barely holds an hour (it wan't much more when it was new btw... )

when i get the ground under my feet a bit firmer in financial way i wanna get myself a new one. i'm looking at 13'' Sony Vaio or HP... maybe Gateway.

oh and i for sure will be getting one of these:

or actually that one seems leaner... better looking:

found here they finally updated Ducks logo. up until recently it was mighty ducks jade and eggplant stuff

hmm.gif i should probably get that into the cool ducks stuff thread smile.gif

Im an idiot. In my race to answer a phone, I tripped over the AC adapter for my laptop, and dragged it down with me. It fell a good 4 or so feet. The laptop landed on the right where the AC adapter was conneceted to the adapter port.

Heres the amazing thing. Apart from a nasty dent/crack along side of the laptop, and part of the casing chipped off, it still works, like battery charging, ac adapter and cd drive... it all works. I wonder how I will explain this to Dell when I tell them to repair it lol.

How are you liking your laptop?

After 4 years I finally decided to replace my Dell Inspiron 1505 and ordered myself a Dell Studio 17. It should be in sometime today or tomorrow ots.gif . I loaded it up thinking I would ditch my desktop and go with the laptop as my primary computer, but that my prove harder than I thought.

I will be buying a new Dell Laptop today or tomorrow...

Undecided between Inspiron 14 or the Studio 14.

I really like the Studio... but it is a bit more expensive

The Studios are pretty nice. I haven't had much hands on time with them, but I have a couple friends/coworkers that recently purchased them and hey all love theirs.

I was debating whether to go smaller (14inch) or larger (17inch). I went with larger since I don't do all that much traveling and the possibility of ditching my desktop and using the laptop as my primary PC. The 17 also has 2 HD bays. Mine is coming with a 500GB drive but I am thinking of adding a SSD for my OS and applications and using the 500GB just for storage.

Well I have a 17" now(old beat up HP), it is my desktop replacement, as this will be.

but truth is I use it on the couch in front of the TV and while it's nice... its a bit large for even that... never mind th efew times I have had to take it somewhere... at that point, it just seems HUGE.

But I'm also buying a Dell Streak... So I'm going 'super mobile'.

My decision was just made for me on which model...

I'm going with the Inspiron 14R, because my son is home schooled we get the EPP discount program and the Studio 14 speced how i wanted is NOT on it.

Well per FedEx my laptop was delivered today at 2:49pm and signed for by an 'L Martinez'. There is no one that works in my office by that name and the package is no where to be found. I guess I have to wait a little longer for my new laptop.

So I finally got my laptop on Saturday. FedEx Home really screwed up and delivered it to the business across the street. They gave me the runaround for days. I had to come into the office on Saturday and wait for it to be delivered. But at least I finally got it.

Very impressed with the Studio 17 so far, and it's not that much larger than my old 15 inch Inspiron.

If you like carrying a phone the size of pizza box in your pants, the Streak is great! haha

Other than the size, I like the Streak, or at least what I have seen of it and read for specs.

I carry the Droid Incredible and love it so far, just waiting for Verizon to push out the Froyo update. Verizon also has an EVO 4G like device that is rumored to be coming out later this year, and if thats the case i might be grabbing that one pretty quick.

the streak is SWEET!!!!

BUT, It is clearly a tablet first, phone 2nd.

If you make a lot of calls, or more specifically a lot of calls not using bluetooth... you'd probably hate holding it up to your head... it IS huge and does feel like holding a waffle to the side of your face.

BUT, if you are like me and find yourself using your phone mainly for txt, email, web browsing, video, maps, facebook, etc... and like turn by turn navigation and the idea of never using another cell phone minute for calls you do make(thanks to google voice integration)...

than it's damn near perfect.

It's my first android phone(been on an iphone) and in this form factor it is very clear that Android is more computer than phone OS... not sure if that same impression carries over on smaller handsets.\

But if you have a G1... the G2 looks SWEET

The G2 does look pretty cool, but I am going with a Samsung Vibrant. We have a several T-Mobile accounts for testing at work and several qualified for an upgrade, so I am ordering it though my work. I got it for less than I could have on my own, and I avoid all the upgrade fees and contract extension. I had my G1 for over a year and loved it, but I am looking forward to something a bit newer.

I think the Vibrant come with 2.1 but is getting the Froyo upgrade in September. I can't wait!

Vibrant is nice... I looked at the Captivate(AT&T's Galaxy S) and was impressed... but I just couldn't pass up the 5" screen of the Streak.
