Ryan Getzlaf said Sunday night that he would play for Canada and suggested that linemate Corey Perry is thinking of playing as well. Getzlaf and Perry won gold at the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Bobby Ryan also said that he would play for the United States. Ryan claimed silver with the rest of his American squad in Vancouver.

The tournament will take place May 4-20 in Helsinki and Stockholm, with the medal games played at Helsinki’s Hartwall Areena.

Meanwhile, Saku Koivu said that he is considering playing for Finland only because it is in his native country. Teemu Selanne is believed to be leaning against it, having already appeared in many international competitions as he considers whether to return for a 20th NHL season.

Fowler threw his name in the hat for the United States team and it figures that he would be under strong consideration after playing in last year’s tournament in Slovakia.

“Nothing official yet but I’ve heard some talks about it,” Fowler said. “I’ve been in touch with a few people. l’d love to play if I got the opportunity. It was a lot of fun last year. I’m sure it’d be a great time again.”
,,,
Jonas Hiller and Luca Sbisa will be asked to play for Switzerland.

Actually I think this could be good for Getzlaf. He can just play without too much pressure and just play his heart out.

They all should be playing - or at least the ones who are asked.

They need it. Physically and mentally.

Koivu also said that he is considering whether to play for Finland in the IIHF world championships, which are in Helsinki next month. He has said that he wouldn’t have done so if they were being played elsewhere.

“We are extremely happy with the response we have received from players and are very pleased with the group that we have been able to assemble to date,” said Kevin Lowe, Canada’s general manager for the 2012 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship. “We are looking forward to getting together as a team in Zurich and going for gold in Helsinki.”
...
The group includes two Olympic gold medallists (Getzlaf, Perry), three Olympians (Bouwmeester, Getzlaf, Perry) and three IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship gold medallists (Bouwmeester, Phaneuf, Ward), while 16 of the 17 players have represented Canada internationally.

isn't it kinda redundant? or did Canada realize how to clone and how they wil have two Perry's and two Getzlafs...

Now that's interesting.

Makes sense mostly... though something inside me alerts. Not sure why.

He wanted to take some time away from the game in order to make a decision on whether to play next season or not, so sounds pretty logical to me.
