NHL's woes could worsen if ESPN opts out of TV deal

QUOTE
College basketball substitute programming on ESPN2 this year (0.4% of homes) has doubled ratings of last year's NHL games (0.2%), which are among the lowest rated of sports events.

"It's not a good sign when your replacement programming is outperforming the NHL," Shapiro said.

And something from the "he couldn't have actually said that" files: rolleyes.gif
QUOTE
"(Disney chairman) Michael Eisner had a great suggestion. When the players are on the bench, have them sit without their helmets. That way you can see their faces."

And Eisner wonders why they are trying to get his ass out of Disney!!! dry.gif

For someone that is supposedly a hockey fan, what a moron. Unless the players have a sixth sense (and we know some don't have any sense rolleyes.gif ), they are never going to know when they will get hit in the face, or needed in a flash. Even with helmets on they still get hurt - memories of Rooch a couple of seasons back, even though that was not on the bench. I have been hit on the side of the head when I was assistant coach to my sons team. It hurts, even at that level. Now there's an idea - the coaches wearing helmets hmm.gif

Hopefully, we don't go back to Fox's glowing puck on TV!

But if ESPN opts out of hockey - ouch!

Hope the players have mastered the quick on, quick off techniques for their helmets. That sounds really practical when there is a shortened bench and short shifts. On with helmet. Off with helmet. On with helmet. Off with helmet. Goodness! What will Feds do? Poor guy wears that awful tuque thingy on his head due to sweaty helmet hair. Aren't there FCC regulations about decency?!

Well, they're already tantalizing some of the puck bunnies. Some players cut the inseams in order to gain better freedom of motion.

I'd really hate to see ESPN drop hockey, but the numbers don't look good. And with an entire season lost, extreme underwater basketweaving and extreme curling could probably put up better ratings. rolleyes.gif

That's the most outrageous Pippi Longstocking clone I've ever seen. Dang DK! You need to put up warnings "Caution! Spit take ahead" so I don't have to clean out my keyboard so often.
