He's back in the news again as possible coach, and the 2006 All-Star festivities will be scrubbed in favor of the Olympics:

Looks like the Great One is going to be the leader of a pack of Coyotes.

The East Valley Tribune (Ariz.) reported Saturday that Wayne Gretzky will be officially introduced as coach of the Phoenix Coyotes about seven to 10 days after the collective bargaining agreement is ratified by the league’s board of governors and the NHL Players’ Association.

“I spoke with Wayne last night,” said Coyotes general manager Mike Barnett, a longtime friend of Gretzky. “There’s obviously speculation that he will step in and be our head coach. I know he’s still very interested in the position.”

One Coyotes official told The Republic that many people within the organization still don't know for sure whether Gretzky is going to become coach, and suggested the reason for that may be because Gretzky and co-owner Steve Ellman, and their lawyers, are still trying to agree on the financial terms of a potential deal.

Gretzky told reporters in Canada last week that the team would not make an announcement regarding the head coaching situation until after Saturday's draft.
