While everybody agrees that Sidney Crosby will be the No. 1 pick whenever the NHL gets around to holding its entry draft, Benoit Pouliot hasn't escaped attention in assessments of eligible hockey talent.

I hate to speak it out loud (or type it out...clear?), but we have a decent chance of landing the #1 pick.

I guess you don't have to worry about losing Grenier!

Carey Price of the Tri-City Americans is the top-ranked goalie.
Price did a great job on a lousy team, and he's a nice kid too.

Anyone know where I can see the full ISS ranking list?? I need to see where some of my boys from the 'Birds came in! biggrin.gif

Unless they can get their act together and get a deal going, there won't be a draft!

I know all the teams want Sidney Crosby, but that 6'3" Benoit Pouliot doesn't sound like a half bad player.

The draft lottery to determine this year's order of selection is expected to have a huge impact on how things play out for the prospects in this year's draft class. That is to suggest this is a year in which there are wildly divergent views on the prospects, that once you get past the top six or seven prospects, different teams have significantly different takes on the players available.

The Seattle Thunderbird blueliner received the same rating from every scout TSN interviewed -- a late first round pick. Not a second rounder, a late first rounder, to a man. The big blueliner isn't a pretty skater, but he exhibits great leadership, plays in all key situations and has good hockey sense and defensive positioning.

There isn't going to be any sense of normalcy in the NHL until the puck actually drops. So why not break from the norm with the draft, just this once. It could give the league a solid head of steam, something it could really use heading into the fall.

Sportsnet has learned three cities are being considered by the league as hosts for the rapidly approaching selection process.

Sources say Toronto, New York and Ottawa are being considered for what will be, in many ways, the game's official re-launch -- with Sidney Crosby playing the starring role.

The lottery formula is as follows - each team begins with three balls. For every playoff appearance in the last three years or No. 1 overall pick over the last four years, a team loses one ball. But each team will still be guaranteed to have one ball in the lottery. The first round will go with teams picking 1 through 30, with the 30th team picking 31st and the draft order 'snaking' back and forth in a seven round draft.

Here's the chart with the past years' pick order and how many lottery balls each team gets: <link>

Bling Crosby

Most 17-year-olds are sweating out college applications and wondering whether cold spoons really remove hickeys.

Sidney Crosby is not your typical 17-year-old.

In the last 5 months, Crosby has signed two major endorsement deals and tomorrow he begins rescuing the NHL.  Heady stuff for a guy who isn't even allowed to vote yet.  Fair or not - and it's probably not - Crosby carries like a gorilla the nickname "The Next One," an obvious off-handed reference to Wayne Gretzky's moniker "The Great One."  He's a 5-11, 193-pound center (and still filling out) who is the undisputed prize in a Crackerjack box of NHL prospects.

Gretzky has publicly stated that Crosby could endanger the Great One's outlandish scoring records, provided of course that the new fan-friendly NHL stands vigilant against marginally talented obstructers and it finally allows the players people pay to see to show us why hockey should be the greatest spectator sport on earth.

Hmm, so does Burke go for Benoit Pouliot (LW), Gilbert Brule <C>, Jack Johnson (D), Bobby Ryan (RW) or ???

(Re-using links previously posted in this thread: <TSN summary of ISS list>, <McKenzie's list>)

It has the Ducks picking Johnson, Hurricanes choosing Pouliot, Wild getting Ryan, and the Canadiens landing Brule.
