PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- The Philadelphia Flyers are buying out the contracts of forwards John LeClair and Tony Amonte.

The buyouts will be announced at a news conference scheduled for Saturday morning, team spokesman Zach Hill said.

Amonte can still help some teams. LeClair not so much. His body has taken enough punishment and I don't think he can go the distance. I always liked him as a player, actually. So, I see Amonte signing with a Carolina, Pittsburgh type team, and LeClair retiring.

What will the price of a buy out players be? Will it be cheap (in a way players have got the cash for coming season...) or will they get the "best possible" $$$ for their names (big names big $$$)? hmm.gif

Even with the across- the-board, 24 percent reduction in existing contracts mandated by the new CBA, the Mighty Ducks are on the hook to pay center Sergei Fedorov $6.08 million, goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere $3.99 million, right wing Petr Sykora $3.116 million, and center Steve Rucchin and defenseman Keith Carney more than $2 million apiece in 2005-06. None should expect to be bought out.

"That is not a prudent use of our season-ticket holders' money," Ducks general manager Brian Burke said. "From talking to other managers, I think you will only see a handful of buyouts (league-wide)."
...
"This is not a good summer to spend a lot of money," Burke said. "It will be a much better summer to spend money next year. I've been meeting with season-ticket holders, and I explained to them that I'm big on sound financial management, so don't panic if I don't do much this summer."

Either that's a smoke screen or you can kiss off Naslund, Forsberg, Niedermayer, etc.

There's a rumor (I know you hate rumors, Reb), that Amonte will go back to Phoenix. LeClair...he had back surgery in May so I don't know that he will sign anywhere.

As for what Burke will or won't do, we're just a little over a week away from finding out. I personally believe he will add at least one superstar and then a lot of gritty guys like Gary Roberts, Darcy Tucker, etc.

Though there still is some agonizing within the organization over the decision, the Rangers plan to buy out the contracts of forward Bobby Holik and defenseman Darius Kasparaitis.

The two bruising veterans signed with the Rangers one day apart in July 2002. Holik got a five-year, $45-million contract that has two years left at $8.85 million per year. Kasparaitis got a six-year, $25.5-million deal that has three years left at a total of $12.8 million.

As expected, the Coyotes have cut ties with Brian Savage via a two-thirds buyout of the veteran left wing's contract.

Multiple NHL sources confirmed the move Sunday.

Johns prime is behind him. But when he retire, I´ll always remember him as a great Kings Killer back in 93. That two game winners in LA has killed the Kings in the Stanley Cup. And Savage another guy who should retire?? hmm.gif

The Flyers started what will soon be a crazy offseason by buying out Amonte and Leclair's contracts. Now it seems that the Redwings have just put Hatcher, McCarty, and Whitney on waivers. Needless to say, this offseason is going to be really interesting...Can't wait to see what the Ducks are going to do. I expect them to make a big splash this offseason, similar to what Arte Moreno did by getting the Guerrero for the Angels. Yea, baseball and hockey are 2 different sports but...if the Samuelies go out and bring a top tier player or 2 to the ducks, the fans will come back in droves.
