Just heard on the FAN590 the Bob Goodenow stepped down, and Ted Saskin is taking over for the NHLPA.

The players are probably wishing this had happened a year ago.

As for Bettman stepping down...why? He just won a huge battle for the owners and made sure that all 30 teams will not only make a profit but will also be able to compete on even footing for years to come. He is a hero with the owners right now, no need for him to step down.

"With the conclusion of the negotiations and the ratification of the new agreement, the parties concur that this is an appropriate action for the future. I am fortunate to have had the opportunity to serve the Players over the past 15 years and to have had the support of a tremendous staff at the NHLPA. I wish the Players every success under the new CBA." - Bob Goodenow

Good riddance to bad rubbish *waves cheerio to Bob*

It's a pity that Bettman won't be going too but at the moment it's just the fans that detest him so he ain't going anywhere. sad.gif

Yes, but he did it at the cost of an entire season and a TV deal, negatively impacting the revenue the owners can now make. They may be happy with the deal, but I wonder if anyone would consider Gary a hero. dry.gif

It's about time! Oh well. Can't cry over spilt milk. Let's hope Saskin does a better job for the players.

clapping.gif clapping.gif clapping.gif clapping.gif Too bad so many had to pay such a big price before Goodenow thought to leave. Bettman might have "won" but a lot of owners were not happy at the loss of a whole season. There are teams that were making money, not all did better during the lockout.

Goodenow's right-hand man, senior director Ted Saskin, was chosen as the successor, which makes sense given that Saskin crafted this deal with his counterpart Bill Daly, now the NHL's deputy commissioner.

Sportsnet Story

Daly and Saskin made this deal, not Goodenow and Bettman. Along with that and the fact that Bettman made Daly a duputy commissioner, I think it's not out of the question that Bettman may be next.

Here's a story about Saskin:

QUOTE
He's well respected by Daly and owners on the negotiating committee for being a pragmatic man, one who can listen and try to find common ground.

Like Daly, Saskin became the face of the lockout, expertly arguing the union's case in the media and displaying the kind of moxie in front of the camera that his predecessor did not show.

Saskin, like Daly, worked countless hours to try and bring this deal to fruition, sleeping very little and spending the last few weeks of negotiation in New York away from his home in Toronto.

Saskin Story

From reading the story, he sounds like he might be the best man for the job.

Good luck to him.

heheheh, 'bout time! Bettman got the Cap, what everyone wanted...fairness for all the teams. Not sure that was MY philosophy, but hey, it is done.

"I don't believe I'll be working in professional hockey in the foreseeable future, by choice," said Goodenow, who led players to a 10-day strike on the eve of the 1992 playoffs and through a lockout that curtailed the 1994-95 season.
