I mean they were the second worst team of the last eason and only because they have Ovechkin they think they haven't to do anyhing on the Free-Agent market???

But with that attitude they can be sure they will be the worst team of the next season!! smile.gif

Time will tell DIG. They might land like Samsonov, Brunette etc. I hope they do something or they'll be in a lot of trouble.

They have a lot of working to do. Maybe the next two years the 'Caps probably will make the playoffs.

Depends on the work they do... They could be very good, but also... Entirely in their hands.

Their division rivals:

Florida - Luongo, Bowmeester, Jokinen, Roberts, Nieuwendyk, Gelinas...

Tampa Bay - Lecavalier, St.Louis, Modin, Boyle, Fedotenko...

Carolina - Gerber, Tverdovsky ( wink.gif ), Hill

Atlanta - Kovalchuk, Heatley, Lehtonen, Holik, Kozlov, Stefan...

Ovechkin alonse and even with Semin is not an answer...

Done.

If Carolina would get Teemu & Paul (they have some cap room left!), they could officially name their team to "Ex Ducks".

I think the Caps are still suffereing from Jagritis, a malady that occurs when you acquire an over-priced star. It is a long lasting illness.

Does Leonsis still own the Caps?

They just signed Ovechkin according to TSN LINK.

"The Washington Capitals have signed forward Alexander Ovechkin to a three year deal. Financial terms were not announced, but Ovechkin's annual salary in this entry-level contract can't exceed $984,200 US based on the league's new collective bargaining agreement."

"I have spoken to Dainius Zubrus and Alexander Semin," Ovechkin said through an interpreter. "They say Washington is a wonderful city, and there is a great atmosphere around the team. I know the rest is up to me.

"I would like to thank George McPhee and the entire organization for their support. I will work very hard to put the team first always and make the fans happy."

Ovechkin and his parents hope to relocate from Moscow to the Washington area sometime in the next two weeks.

Now that the lockout is over and a salary cap is in place, Leonsis says the Capitals will spend only $25 million or so in salaries, well below the $39 million cap.

"Many of you who have come to know me during the past six years realize that I really want you to love the Capitals and that I want you to like me as an owner," Leonsis wrote. "Admittedly, in the past I did some things as a result of listening to our fans, and out of that desire to be popular, it really would be easy right now to sign some of those big-name free agents to get you off my back.

"But I'm now more experienced, and I believe the new system creates a real opportunity for our team to build the right way. I'm willing to take short-term pain for the long-term gain."

"So far Washington hasn't shown much interest," Zubrus said from his home in Montreal. "They have talked to my agent, but there is no offer. My first choice is to play in the NHL, but since Washington hasn't shown interest in me, looks like I will play for [Lada Togliatti, his Russian club] because I have to play hockey somewhere."
...
Semin, meantime, still has one year of active military duty left to serve in Russia, according to Goryachkin.
...
"He was drafted [last year] into the military district where Lada is located," Goryachkin wrote in an e-mail yesterday. "Lada contacted the local military authorities and persuaded them to allow Semin to play for them instead of going into active duty. He cannot play for any other team in Russia and he cannot leave the country without permission or he will become a deserter and subject to criminal prosecution."

i don't know if this has been mentioned already but 'Hockey's Future' believe that many of Washington's top 20 prospects are expected to play this season. This could be one of the reasons that they aren't the biggest spender or any spender at that.

Defenseman Josef Boumedienne, who was tendered a qualifying offer, apparently did not return it, and his status is unclear. The same is true for center-right wing Dainius Zubrus, who did not return the offer he was tendered a year ago and may opt to play in the Russian Super League again this season.
...
Also listed on the roster posted on the Caps' Web site is left wing Alexander Ovechkin, who has come to terms with the team on a three-year contract. But the 19-year-old is still in his native Russia and has not signed the deal. He is scheduled to make $1.3?million in salary and rookie bonus this season; another $2.7?million in salary cap space has been reserved for possible incentives.
