Sharks General Manager Doug Wilson said his team's inactivity is all part of the master plan. Looking around the league, he borrows a phrase from economist Alan Greenspan -- "irrational exuberance'' -- to describe what he sees elsewhere.

"We have people who are ready to break through and be dominant players in this league,'' he said at the height of last week's player shuffle. "I like what we have and where we're going -- much the same way Tampa Bay does and Ottawa does.''

Funny comment from Pang about former Shark Ricci in the article linked above:

• Phoenix wasn't active last week, but that may be because the Coyotes added Brett Hull and Mike Ricci a year ago. For Ricci, the new scenery also means a new look: The long hair is gone.

"I talked to him on the phone and he said it's very short,'' Pang said. "He told me he's gone from rock star to model. And I told him, `Not with that nose.' ''

The organization is committed to developing its own talent and rewarding those who earn their stripes through the system.

"I don't believe in mercenaries," general manager Doug Wilson said.

Coach Ron Wilson liked the fact that his roster will have had minimal turnover since the end of the 2003-04 season.

"I might be the only coach to come back with essentially the same team that played in the playoffs two years ago," he said. "Like most people these days, I'm on the Internet reading all the questions about why the Sharks don't these players. But I'm happy where we're at."
