"We didn't really play like a team [in '03-04]," Yashin said. "That's what the best teams do to win in the first round and go forward." He lamented a struggle within the team, something he addressed indirectly by saying "The team that trusts each other and plays for each other and creates this atmosphere in the dressing room -- the one-unit team, it doesn't matter who is on the ice -- if the team really believes in that, they have a chance to win the Stanley Cup." Yashin believes the Islanders never had that unconditional trust.
...
The trust starts with the owner, Charles Wang, who has developed a close personal relationship with his highest-paid employee. Wang could have opted to keep the others and rid himself of Yashin and his $7.6-million salary, which is the second-highest in the NHL behind Rangers forward Jaromir Jagr ($8.4 million).
...
Parrish and Yashin have a good relationship. They are the only two obvious choices to replace Peca as captain. They might even wind up linemates with Satan. "Man," Parrish said, "that would be a fun line to play with."
...
"He's a tremendous playmaker and he's also got a great finishing touch," Satan said from Slovakia last week. "He can score goals and make passes. He's proved in the past he belongs among the top players in the NHL." On the phone, Yashin was quiet as this message was relayed to him.

He paused, then laughed. "It's nice to hear someone say something nice about me," he said. "I forgot what that feels like."

I guess the Isles could make Yashin captain of the team.

Yeah! Peca is gone, so it's Yashins team now. I believe he will be wearing a "C" this season.

More fuzzy math in buy out vs. keeping ...
QUOTE
In Yashin's case, it would have cost the Islanders almost $28 million over the remaining six years and $43 million of the original 10-year, $90-million deal, which already had been significantly reduced as a result of the 24 percent rollback provision in the collective- bargaining agreement.

But instead of paying out $4 million per year to a player it could not employ, even though it wouldn't leave a mark against the $39-million cap, the Islanders decided to keep him on the payroll at $7.2 million.
...
Next year the team has the right to buy out the contract at two-thirds but pay it off over two times the remainder of the deal, which, in Yashin's case, would be 10 years. The buyout amount next summer would be about $20 million, which leaves an average of $2 million per year that counts against the cap. But it also would save $5.2 million of cap space over the next five seasons.

Yashin has had many opportunities to perform up to expectations - I guess making him the Captain would put the responsibility squarely on his shoulders, but I'm not convinced that will work. If it does, good for him and the Islanders. If it doesn't, well it's no surprise to me and the Islanders have wasted a kajillion dollars on him. (Kajillion = what Tkachunkiest spent on pies and Big Macs.) biggrin.gif
