Curtis Joseph has been taken off the list of available NHL free agents, as the Phoenix Coyotes have signed the veteran goaltender to a one-year contract.

"We are very pleased to add a goaltender like Curtis with his many years of exceptional play and experience," said Coyotes General Manager Mike Barnett. "He is as excited to be coming to Phoenix as our fans will be in seeing him in a Coyotes uniform. We like this fit a lot."

And from last ime hockey was played: The Red Wings put him (CuJo) on waivers twice during the regular season, and he finished the year with a 16-10-3 record.

It's sad to see CuJo leaving Detroit after these disappointing seasons, he should have won a Stanley Cup there! He was the Wings' best during the 2004 Playoffs! Good luck CuJo in Phoenix!

"Neither of these goaltenders has ever been viewed as backups," Barnett said. "They indeed are at different stages in their careers, but we saw that as a positive. Curt has an impressive history but isn't content to rest on his laurels, while Boucher has every intention of creating more history. They both welcome the competition for minutes and don't expect to have anything handed to them."

Terms of the Joseph's were not announced, but sources said Joseph signed to a base salary of $900,000 US that could increase to $2.25 million with bonuses. The bonuses are said to be multilayered based on games played and performance in the playoffs should the Coyotes make it.
