I dont think thats the title of this topic is very true. Keenan tried to lowball Loungo and didnt give him what he wanted, then offended him by taking him to arbitration. So Loungo decided he didnt want to play in Florida. He rejected 5 mill a year because he didnt want to play there, and they knew he didnt want to, it was a "cover our ass" offer so they could claim they did whatever they could to keep him.
IMO Keenan gambled and loss, look for loungo to be traded before the start of the season.

Whereas, I agree that Keenan gambled and lost - I think that Luongo needs to get ahold of his ego for just a minute. He thinks that he is worth Brodeur money when he has never played in a NHL playoff game more less won a Stanley Cup. He hasn't won a vezina or any sort of accolades for his play. He needs to prove himself before making such huge demands.

Loose loose situation:
Luongo lost. He is worth more $$$.
Keenan lost. No long term deal, no trust from goalie.
Fans of Panthers lost. The guy who kept this organization live night after night is unhappy. It will show on his game...

A 1.8 million dollar pay cut. He will not garner 5 million a year in the new landscape. After this season's cap, it will be smaller next year and very few teams will have 5 million a year. HE BLEW it for thinking with his heart and emotions....

Luongo rejected the $5 million deal because he didn't want to be stuck in Florida for 5 years, not because it wasn't enough money. And Keenen knew he'd reject that deal, it wasn't a real offer. He'll sign for less somewhere else for sure.
And the reason he hasn't won any awards or been to the playoffs is because he plays for the Panthers and they suck. Put him on the Devils and he'd be as good if not better than Brodeur.

Luongo is one great goalie. We watched him while Ozolinsh was playing for that soap opera team and if he had any other team in front, he would have been playing for the cup and gathering all the goalie awards.
I don't blame him for wanting to distance himself from that head case...

Look at it this way....
1. Sign the contract and Keenan trades him or he's locked up for 25 million dollars. If Keenan can't trade him, he buys him out....
2. Take 3.2 million for a year and go out on the market with a smaller salary cap next year and less opportunities to make Big $$.
3. FLA will be much improved this year.....

The thing is, it would be much harder for Luongo to find a team willing to take on that huge 5 year 5 million dollar contract. Keenan wouldn't buy him out, he'd just let Luongo keep playing in Florida. Keenan doesn't want him to leave Florida, Luongo wants to go. He'd be stuck there.
If he doesn't get traded this year, he'll still be able to ask for 4 mil or something as a free agent next year. And at this point it seems like getting on another team is more of a priority than the money. He's done with the Panthers.

I would love to see Luongo on a contender...he deserves a shot at the Cup.
