"Obviously it's a disappointing loss," Holland said. "We were really counting on him."

I'm not sure why you bring this up, how many players get very injurd and sick playing in Russia? Not very many. Millions of people live in Russia and ar fine, so why won't be he OK? If I was him, I'd be willing to play in Russia unless I was getting a monster contract; being at home would be better than living over in the USA.
EDIT: On being greedy, that's not a logical way of puting this. He's going to be gitting $6MUS in Russia. More than what he could get in the NHL.

I think if the European players want to play at home go ahead. It's great that they don't have to leave home to make a living. We'll see 'em at the Olympics.
Not to mention that there are a million Canadians waiting to take their place!

When you say it that way, you could say he was greedy. (didn't read it that way before, thought it meant he just wanted more from the Wings). But I wouldn't think it would be greed making him stay home. It would be more of the fact he'd be staying home, and erning the same (or more) than in the NHL.
Two jobs that pay the same, one means moving halfway around the world away from your home and that, the other at home. Not a hard choice.
I want more players to play here in Europe. I'd have a chance to see them play then. I could save up for a while and buy a plane ticket to a city in main land europe easy, to the USA it would cost too much to make it worth it. I want the leagues here to grow strong. It'll make the worlds better too, more players that are better. You'd still have the guys over in the NHL in the playoffs.

It sure doeesn't sound like the pay would've been near the same since the Wings are just $7M under the cap with Zetterberg still to re-sign:
...
"I think I am worth at least what (Dany) Heatley or (Joe) Thornton got from their deals," the Reuters news agency quoted Datsyuk as telling Russian reporters Monday.
Thornton signed for three years and $21 million with Boston, and Heatley for three years and $13.5 million with Ottawa.
The Wings were offering Datsyuk between $3 million and $4 million per season on a one-, three- or four-year contract. But re-signing him might have been difficult even without a salary cap.

That just gives him more reason to play in Russia, but the idea is the same.

"You never know in these things," defenseman Jiri Fischer said. "You never know what a person is thinking. It's a very individual situation.
"For Pavel, this is an opportunity to stay near his home, play close to home, play in his home country. You can't argue with that."
