Without the IIHF contrat. He can go to the NHL anytime. The CBA says he must sign before the new year (I think) for him to play this season. I like him staying in Russia, I hope more players stay home to play. The NHL isn't always the best place to be.

He sounds very greedy. I'm sure the Red Wings are offering as much as they can afford, and if that's not good enough for him than good luck in Russia, and hope you don't get injured or sick because their medical facilities suck out loud.

The Wings were offering Datsyuk between $3 million and $4 million per season on a one-, three- or four-year contract. But re-signing him might have been difficult even without a salary cap.

"Obviously it's a disappointing loss," Holland said. "We were really counting on him."

I'm not sure why you bring this up, how many players get very injurd and sick playing in Russia? Not very many. Millions of people live in Russia and ar fine, so why won't be he OK? If I was him, I'd be willing to play in Russia unless I was getting a monster contract; being at home would be better than living over in the USA.

EDIT: On being greedy, that's not a logical way of puting this. He's going to be gitting $6MUS in Russia. More than what he could get in the NHL.

Thus, what SC was getting at with greedy...he followed the money. But I think maybe it was more than that.

I think if the European players want to play at home go ahead. It's great that they don't have to leave home to make a living. We'll see 'em at the Olympics.

Not to mention that there are a million Canadians waiting to take their place! wink.gif

When you say it that way, you could say he was greedy. (didn't read it that way before, thought it meant he just wanted more from the Wings). But I wouldn't think it would be greed making him stay home. It would be more of the fact he'd be staying home, and erning the same (or more) than in the NHL.

Two jobs that pay the same, one means moving halfway around the world away from your home and that, the other at home. Not a hard choice.

I want more players to play here in Europe. I'd have a chance to see them play then. I could save up for a while and buy a plane ticket to a city in main land europe easy, to the USA it would cost too much to make it worth it. I want the leagues here to grow strong. It'll make the worlds better too, more players that are better. You'd still have the guys over in the NHL in the playoffs.

It sure doeesn't sound like the pay would've been near the same since the Wings are just $7M under the cap with Zetterberg still to re-sign:
QUOTE
No figures were confirmed, but reports out of Russia had Datsyuk signing with Avangard for one year at $6 million.
...
"I think I am worth at least what (Dany) Heatley or (Joe) Thornton got from their deals," the Reuters news agency quoted Datsyuk as telling Russian reporters Monday.

Thornton signed for three years and $21 million with Boston, and Heatley for three years and $13.5 million with Ottawa.

The Wings were offering Datsyuk between $3 million and $4 million per season on a one-, three- or four-year contract. But re-signing him might have been difficult even without a salary cap.

That just gives him more reason to play in Russia, but the idea is the same.

Exactly. You shouldn't have to leave your home and family to play good hockey. And then your hometown fans wouldn't have to hop a plane to see you. The old East/West rivalry wold be renewed for the Worlds/Olympics....this could work out fine. wink.gif

If Datsyuk has an out clause, the next deadline is Oct. 5, when the Wings open the 2005-06 season against St. Louis. If Datsyuk plays a game for Omsk past that date, he cannot return to the NHL for the remainder of the season.

Agent Gary Greenstin told Wings general manager Ken Holland that the one-year contract Datsyuk signed with Avangard Omsk of the Russian Superleague has a no-out clause.
...
"You never know in these things," defenseman Jiri Fischer said. "You never know what a person is thinking. It's a very individual situation.

"For Pavel, this is an opportunity to stay near his home, play close to home, play in his home country. You can't argue with that."

Ahti has posted other Datsyuk news in the International Forum: <link>

But I thought I'd post some more here:
QUOTE
In many ways, Datsyuk's decision to stay in Russia represents the first time in the new CBA era that an NHL team was effectively outbid for the rights to a front-line NHL player. Last year, during the lockout, a handful of prominent NHL stars made their way to Russia (Vince Lecavalier, Dany Heatley and others), largely because it was the only league paying NHL-type salaries, but most have since worked their way back to North America.

Dynamo coach Krikunov adds new twist: "I can say nothing about Pavel. It is possible he goes to Red Wings."

So far, Pavel Datsyuk follows Alexander Ovechkin's directions this summer: Moscow, Omsk, Moscow... NHL? Last step is not done yet, but it is most obvious now. Obvious because of the following statements: 1) Datsyuk wants to play in the NHL; 2) Detroit proposed an offer to Datsyuk that satisfies him; 3) contracts with Avangard and Dynamo are not registered in the PHL yet.

Detroit GM Holland speaks:
QUOTE
There's no agreement between the Russian Federation and the IIHF-NHL, so that leaves some hope that we could still get Pavel signed," Holland said. "However, we're operating under the assumption that he won't be with us this season." & "We would not negotiate a settlement. That's not an option to me nor to the Red Wings," Holland stressed. "If there's a way Pavel can get out of his contract, we're going to look at ways to do it." & "I'm not going to talk about numbers, but we're a ways apart," Holland said. "Over this past weekend we make some progress and a date came and they made the decision that they did." & "I talked to Pavel for 5-10 minutes on Sunday night, felt good about the offer I had made, and woke up Monday morning to the news he had signed in Russia," Holland continued. "In the end they looked at their options and felt like signing in Russia was the better one."
