Fewer games, far fewer East/West meetings, and more Ducks vs. Kings, Sharks, 'Yotes and Stars games. I personally would hate to see the season shortened, but it is probably a very good idea from all perspectives.

I think east not playing west is a BAD idea. what about people who are fans of west teams who live in the east, and there only option is to watch them when they come to town?

Ya but there's not a big ass difference about that for example I'm a ducks fan and used to be a Wings fan and I live in montreal and those two teams come here in Montreal every two years so not much of a difference.

I could tolerate a shorter schedule, but I personally do not like eliminating east vs. west competition. I like to be able to see all the teams in the NHL play. When would I get an opportunity to do that otherwise?

From a playoff perspective, the only time you would face the Eastern conference would be in the Stanley Cup Finals. You need to see everyone at least once during the season to make it a level playing field. Otherwise, it's going to get skewed. Do we want to play the Kings 10 times and never see half the NHL? Oh yippee. Kings fans in my building even more.

I want an opportunity to boo the hell out of Brodeur and watch Martin St. Louis score goals, and if Messier hadn't retired, Mallard would start a petition requiring his presence.

72 games does not really bother me, but I do not like the idea of not seeing East/West games. I really enjoy it when Eastern Conference teams, especially strong EC teams, play at the Pond and/or when the Ducks play them on their ice. Growing up, my team was the Flyers, so I always look forward to it when they come to town. 72 games is a good idea (from all perspectives meaning the owners and the players), but they need to keep East/West matches! The owners and players are not likely to see any of it the same as the fans. Maybe we need a NHLFA to be in on these talks!!! wink.gif

IF the fans striked, there really would be NO HOCKEY!!!

I think that if the season should be shortend then they should go with this:

30 vs. East (home one year, away the next)
20 vs. Division (two home, two away)
20 vs. West (one home, one away)

You still get to play all the teams in the NHL, but the seasons shorter by 12 games. Personaly I don't want it to happen, I like it the way it is!

Rucchin20, there is an NHLFA. Check out their website.

I don't know how much of an hearing the NHL or NHLPA give them though. sad.gif

Anyone besides me wondering what the shortening of the season will do to the price of a seat at an arena??

Also, it's quite likely that the NHL will have "special" preseason matches between the East and West to whet our appetites for the other conference teams. The prices for those "special" matchups will be similar, I will guess, to playoff prices!

It's all about the bottom line, and I can't see the owners deliberately cutting down on 10 games worth of revenue without some compensation somewhere else in the season (other than no flying, no staying in hotels).

the divisional rivalries system that bettman wants so they could increase the emotion actually waters down the rivalry.

Whats the point of playing your fucking guts out if you are just going to see them again next week and have to do it all over again?

Reading in between the lines...

The new schedule assumes that they will not be getting rid of hockey franchises. That’s good news to me! smile.gif

this is such a great idea. less games equals less injuries. like melrose said, every game will mean more. id rather see more games against teams such as la and colorado. i hope this gets approved real soon.

If they cut 10 games out of the schedule:

-- will season ticket prices be affected
-- will they start the season in late October, or begin in early October but end it in late March?

Ten games down means less revenue for either team. But at least they're not cutting out franchises.

Why is cutting out franchises a bad thing? Don't you think the league overexpanded?
