The Blue Jackets dressed out only 20 players and had 13 scratches due to a flu outbreak on the team, limiting coach Gerald Gallant's options against the fully loaded Red Wings.

A score of 9-0 looks pretty bad, but look at the circumstances - it ain't normal. I wouldn't read too much into it.

Even in a preseason game there is no excuse to lose 9-0

Still 9:0 is huge...

With the flu bug that hit most of the team (<link>), I'm amazed they were even able to get enough players to warm the bench. Although this puts them behind the curve, hopefully they'll all have recovered by Oct. 5.
Exactly. I'd like to see ANY team in the NHL have 75% of its players out with the flu and win a game. Come on people be realistic!

Yeah I agree. With the way things going in Columbus, nobody will be good. I hope they battle it out and will be ready on opening day.

That's my point exactly, DTP and DK!

Shouldn't there be a mercy rule? In light of their flu bug, it's amazing we didn't see any barfing penalties. Thank goodness this hit them in the pre-season. I'm sure Columbus will bounce back.
