Before Friday, the last time Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur missed a game because of injury was Nov. 4, 2000. But even without Brodeur, who strained the medial collateral ligament in his right knee Wednesday, the Devils were able to defeat the Buffalo Sabres on Friday night at Continental Arena, 3-2, and end a two-game losing streak.

Tampa Bay beat the Caps 4-2 last night, the final goal an empty netter, after Washington unraveled for just a few minutes midway through the third period. At the time the score was tied, thanks to a pair of highlight-reel scores by Alex Ovechkin, but Vincent Lecavalier scored on a power-play shot from the right point with the Caps still stumbling around and that was it.

Jonathan Cheechoo swept the puck in during a goal-mouth scramble with 3.7 seconds left Friday night and Patrick Marleau had a goal and two assists to lead the San Jose Sharks to a 5-4 victory over the Los Angeles Kings.

Matt Cullen beat Antero Niittymaki from the right side late in the third period Friday night and Eric Staal had a hat trick, as the Carolina Hurricanes rallied again and beat the Philadelphia Flyers, 8-6.

Radek Dvorak scored the tiebreaking goal at 8:12 of the third period and the Oilers snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 5-3 victory over the Dallas Stars on Friday night. Edmonton has won two straight in Dallas. Before that, the Oilers were 1-18-2 in Texas since the Stars moved from Minnesota in 1993.

Trevor Letowski has changed his opinion about shootouts.

Letowski scored in the fifth sudden-death shootout round -- the NHL's longest tiebreaker this season -- to give Martin Prusek and the Columbus Blue Jackets a 2-1 victory over the Minnesota Wild on Friday night.

"I'm a pretty big fan of them now," Letowski said with a big grin. "I had the goose bumps going. To be out there all by yourself, when all eyes are on you, is quite a feeling. It's pretty exciting. It's nice to shoot when you have a chance to win it."
