There's also an amusing story that goes with the contract Gretzky signed at centre ice of what was then the Northlands Coliseum in Edmonton.
In his 1990 autobiography, Gretzky recalled how nervous he was about signing himself away for 10 years, with options to stay 10 more years in the Alberta capital. Gretzky asked his friend and roommate Ace Bailey what to do. Bailey replied that if Gretzky wasn't sure, he should sign the name Bob Smith.
Surrounded at centre ice by Pocklington, his family, a full rink, a live television audience and an oversized birthday cake, Gretzky said in his book: "I actually started to make the B for Bob, but then I chickened out and I changed it. That's the weirdest W you ever saw."
As for the rest of the ceremony, Gretzky admitted: "I never did find out what was in that cake. They took it to the dressing room and one of the guys sat on it."
