Montreal Canadiens' prospect Alexander Perezhogin has been suspended indefinitely without pay by the American Hockey League after a stick swinging incident in Hamilton on Friday night. The league will likey hand down a more definitive punishment on Monday after further reviewing the incident.

Criminal charges are also a possibility.

Cleveland Barons defenceman Garrett Stafford was taken to hospital after Perezhogin hit him in the head with a baseball-style swing of his stick. Stafford lay bleeding and convulsing on the ice after the hit. He was taken to hospital where he was treated for a grade three concussion and facial lacerations. Stafford was later released and was scheduled to head back to Cleveland.
...
To be fair, the tape also shows that Perezoghin's swing may have been in made retaliation. During the play in question, Stafford and Perezoghin fell to the ice in front of the net. While rolling over to get up, Stafford appeared to take a swing at Perezhogin with his stick. Stafford's stick missed Perezhogin, flashing just over his head. Perezhogin then turned and swung his stick at Stafford.
....

A two-handed baseball swing? I don't care whether it was retaliation or not. There is no place for these kinds of incidents in hockey.

Wouldn't have been as bad if he hadn't turned around or hadn't been on his knees. I don't think it was his intent to hit him like that but it's still a horrible attack.

Damn! That is totally beyond anything reasonable, beyond anything even close to responsable. Someone who does that has no place in hockey on any level, and criminal charges are not out of line! :beat:

That is just wrong!!!

Here's why I think it wasn't supposed to be that bad. When he swung his stick, he was turned around and had no idea the other guy was on his knees. If the other guy had been on his skates, then the stick would have merely slashed his shin pads. Granted, this is careless and irresponsible use of the stick that should be punished, but I find it hard to believe he tried to go for the head...

The funny thing is right before Stafford got hit he missed hitting Perezhogin with a two handed slash of his own. It didn't miss Perezhogin's head by much. I'm not saying Perezhogin was justified. Both of them were pretty careless.

Here is a link to a better video clip.

:uh: As I've been saying all along, it's too easy to jump to rash conclusions about events with just a smidgen of information available.....
The incident was ugly and uncalled for, but as MT pointed out, the kid on the ice tried to do the same to the other player, missed and got hit instead. If he would have been just a little higher up, he could have been the hurter and not the hurtee... :but: no.gif

That was a idiotic and stupid thing to do, It happened to me to I got hit in the face with the stick thank god i had those steel protection covers to protect ma face once that kid banged the steel covers I physically grabbed him and pinned him down to the ice and I almost had a concussion of the brain.

that was one of the scariest things i have ever seen ... that player laying on the ice shaking ... horrible ... it was justified for that whole line to beat the sh*t out of that guy ... he deserved it
