Since some of us are interested in this kind of thing and since the Hubble just captured a great shot of the Crab Nebula, I decided to start a topic on this. Post your pictures, thoughts etc. here.

That is pretty awesome. I wonder if anything within that beast is habitable anymore. And i wonder if it still produces as much heat? Quite an interesting subject!

In the UK this week a program called Space Cadets starts. Its basically supposed to be the biggest practical joke on tv ever. Channel 4 (the channel that is showing this) is going to have a group of people who are going to think that they are going to Russia to go through astronaut training and then going to be launched into space. However they are going to be really flown around England in a plane for a couple of hours and think that they are flying to Russia but then they are going to land back in England and then then put in a hanger where the whole space thing happens. Its going to be interesting to see if the producers pull this off. The people will be paid everyday they think that they are in space.

Yeah, I read about the Space Cadets progamme and I may have even posted about it in the say what thread. I thought the concept was a bit much. I'm not a fan of reality tv and wasn't impressed with this idea.

Pluto mission ready for lift-off

Bummers! Mother Nature decided to play her hand and trump Father Time. Launch is scrubbed until tomorrow due to excessive ground winds at the close of the launch window. Tune in tomorrow 1:16 to 3:15 p.m. EST for the next attempt.

bye2.gif I just hope I'm still kicking when the probe reaches Pluto and the Kuiper Belt. It's stuff we only guess at right now, to get some real answers would be a real thrill....

"We got the launch off at two o'clock Eastern Time and at 2:50, from Canberra in Australia, we received the first signals from the New Horizons spacecraft and the telemetry all indicates that every system is 'go,'" said project manager Glen Fountain. "All the systems on the spacecraft are what we call in the business, they're green. They're in good shape."
...
Pluto was discovered in 1930 by Tombaugh, who died in 1997 at age 90. His 93-year-old wife, Patricia, attended today's launching, along with her daughter and son in law. Asked Sunday what her husband would say about the current debate over whether Pluto is a bona fide planet, Patricia Tombaugh said, 'you know what he'd say in frustration? 'It's there. So we're going there to see what's there.'"

Today, Stern announced that a portion of Tombaugh's ashes was on board the New Horizons spacecraft.

"My husband would be 100 on Jan. 4. So it's a nice time to have it go there," said Patricia. "He would be so happy and so interested in all this, you know, because it was his thing."
