NHL owners might be able to spend a little more money on players' salaries next year.

Owners will find out the projected salary cap for the 2006-07 NHL season when the league's board of governors meets next week in Scottsdale, Ariz.

What they will discover, according to Canadian Press reporter Pierre LeBrun, is that the current salary cap of $39 million US won't be going down, but instead increase.

Hmmm....who would have thunk it? After all the yelling and screaming by the Union to not tie the cap to revenues, they actually increase. Glad they had such faith in the game of hockey.

They've got more money to spend next season. Commissioner Gary Bettman, as expected, told owners at the board of governors meeting Thursday that current revenue projections will see the salary cap rise to somewhere between a low of $40 million US and a high of $45 million.

Sort of connected, with this talk of trading for Glenn Murray it won't as bad of a cap hit. The increase would be enough to house his contract for a bit. Not sure if anyone's said this. Also, it's siad that there will be a nive UFA pool to to have a look at. Getzlaf, Perry and Ryan on there entry contracts, Smid and Penner too. We could have quite a bit of cash to drop round for a year or two. But I'm not sure how much money the owners are wanting to put up. The cap means nothing if you're only give a $35m.

NHL player paycheques just got a little bigger.

Citing higher than expected revenue forecasts for this season, the NHL and NHL Players' Association have reduced the amount of money taken off each cheque and put in reserve.

Players average 13 paycheques per season from October to April.

For a player on the roster for the entire season, the total deduction would amount to 7.4 per cent of his salary if nothing changed.

For a player making $1.6 million US this season, expected to be the average salary, that would amount to $118,400.
