We're nearly a month into the new dawn of the NHL, and the task of trying to figure out what's a penalty and what isn't remains as foggy as a ever.
...
Nolan Pratt was whistled for delay of game when he sent a puck over the glass - an automatic penalty, right? Depends on who is officiating the game. That's because during Tampa Bay's game against Detroit on Dec. 17 a similar situation happened when Brendan Shanahan had a puck "explode" off his stick. In the view of the officials that night, the Lightning bench was informed, that play was not a penalty because in that case it was a discretionary call. Friday in New York, however, the Tampa Bay bench was told it was an automatic penalty.

hmm.gif I think I've been saying the same thing for a while now. The rules change from game to game, it's just mind boggling(sp?) (for all you spell freaks).

If you watch several games each day, you see the vast difference on how the rules are interpreted. The puck over the glass has been explained in a hundred ways, including the fact that a penalty or not depends on from what part of the ice the puck gets shot out. blink.gif huh.gif hockey1.gif

Under "Officiating Points Of Emphasis" at NHL.com:

QUOTE
Any player who shoots the puck directly over the glass in his defending zone will be penalized for delay of game.

Doesn't appear to leave anything subject to interpretation.

So are there any rules about referring to a penalized player as "that guy over there?"

I think that was the Coach's beef. He was told by the refs at the Detroit game that the rule was discretionary. Then it wasn't.

Either way I think Tampa has a legitimate beef.

I hate this penalty anyway, but if you're gonna call it, you have to call it every time. I think hockey is the only sport where the rules are subject to interpretation and players get away with cheating almost constantly. hmm.gif
