well, rewind to the beginning of the season, and who were the know-alls picking to win the cup?
thats right---the detroit red wings, or the colorado avalanche, or the new jersey devils, or the dallas stars. and which ones are still in the race? lets see--avs and wings, 2nd round: bye-bye!! devils and stars, 1st round: bye bye..
who remains? the sharks and the flames in the west, the lightning and the flyers in the east. wow, who'd have ever thunk?
with the cba, teams will [probably] no longer be able to "buy" a championship; didn't work this season anyways. ever get a feeling, the tides are turning: the fans spoiled by teams that consistently win cups, and conference championships, will now know what it is like to watch their teams struggle.
THE ELITES ARE OUT!!!!!!!!

I consider the Flyers pretty elite.

Good 'Ole Bar :melrose: picked the Avs, so that was the kiss of death (too bad
). Now the talking heads are picking the Flyers and Flames in the SCF. I'm glad to see some new blood in the finals. When was the last time the Avs, Wings, Stars and/or Devils were not at least one of the teams in the SCFs? Nucks v. Rangers in 1995?
The Devils may not look a lot different next year, except that Scott Stevens may not be back. The Avs and the Wings (even moreso) will probably look very different, and TG might be gone. Ha! See what the Avs get for firing Bob Hartley?
I think the Flyers are contenders, but not elite. Same with the Stars.

Last year espn had a "what's hot, what's not" column predicting match ups in each of the playoff rounds. Least likely match up for the Western Conference Finals were the Wild and the Ducks. I notice they didn't do that this year.
As for "The Season," they'll never be allowed in a hockey locker room again! So far it's two "likely" winning teams that have gone bye bye early on. :bye:
So far, I'm still in the running with my San Jose/Tampa match up in the Cup Finals.

Serves ESPN right. They picked two teams they thought were slam dunks to win the Stanley Cup. Maybe next year they should try a different approach.

Do you realize ESPN hasn't called Calgary a Cinderella team yet?

Yes, you are right. Perhaps because they won a Cup before. Although I'D think that term would apply, IF one should be using it, and they shouldn't. That implies you just were boinked into the playoffs like magic, and implies no hard work was involved. Meaning, the Ducks last year, etc. I think perhaps because hockey still is the way where a few teams are always at the top. In all the years the Avs have been the Avs, this is only the 3rd year they were NOT in the Conference finals. I think ESPN has been spoiled.
