He's a left winger, has the ability to score goals and really help out our power play. He currently makes $800,000 and half of that has already been paid. He is also under contract for $525,000 next year, but he could be a Steve Thomas type of pickup.

What does everyone think?

From the AP wires:

Lightning waive Andreychuk, saying he can't keep up

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - The Tampa Bay Lightning waived 42-year-old
captain Dave Andreychuk today.
Team officials say the inspirational leader of their Stanley Cup
championship team could not keep up with the speed the N-H-L's new
rules have unleashed.
Andreychuk had six goals and 12 assists in 42 games this season.
He ranks second all-time in the N-H-L among left wings in goals
(640), assists (698) and points (1,338). He reached the 20-goal
mark for the 19th time in 2003-2004, third most in N-H-L history
behind Gordie Howe (22) and Ron Francis (20). His 1,338 career
points is tied for 23rd most in N-H-L history.
During the Lightning's championship run in 2004, he had a goal
and 13 assists as he won the Stanley Cup for the first time.
The Lightning says Andreychuk will be assigned to their A-H-L
affiliate so that they can pay his 800-thousand-dollar salary, but
he won't be required to report.
Andreychuk has also played for Buffalo, Toronto, New Jersey,
Boston and Colorado.

Wow! I'm a bit surprised at this news. He wouldn't be a bad one to have for that price though hmm.gif especially for the sake of the youngsters.

Hes a great guy, but hes too old and too slow and he would be worth it for the end of this season MAYBE, but not for the additional year left on his contract.

I'd say go for it. Play him on a line with Perry and Getzlaf so they get some experience playing with old uncle Dave. Not only that, he was the former Captain of the Lightning so you also add leadership. BTW, with $5 mil+ unused in our cap, why not spend like 500k for this guy?

If you pick up Andreychuk, why don't you go for Chelios, too? Although Andreychuk is two months younger than Stumpy, the fact of the matter is that he is 42 going on 43 this year. Dave and I could have graduated high school together!

Jeez, and the Bolts just couldn't keep him until the end of the year and let him retire gracefully? Classy.

The Blue Jackets waived their captain (Marchant), the Bruins trade theirs (Thornton) and the Lightning have now waived their captain. Having the 'C' on your chest doesn't mean as much as it used to.

A great article ...

QUOTE
In searching for the one word to describe the way Dave Andreychuk's hockey career came to an end, brutal seems to fit.
...
He simply loved playing, loved the game, loved just coming to the rink, too much to ever stop.

Dave Andreychuk would never surrender his hockey stick, it would have to be pried out of his hands.

The Lightning did just that this week.

It's bad enough that the Lightning waived Andreychuk. You gotta wave too?? wink.gif

Sure wish he could've gone out on his own terms.

That's right - I'm brutal enough to wave at Andreychuk. biggrin.gif

I agree completely - he deserved more than that, especially having captained the team to the Stanley Cup.

Andreychuk understands it's over

QUOTE
TAMPA, Fla. (CP) - He's not officially retired, because he's still earning an NHL paycheque for the rest of the season, but Dave Andreychuk sounded Thursday like he had come to terms with the end of his 23-year career.

''There's not much more for me to accomplish,'' the 42-year-old said at a news conference.

''Things just didn't work out for me this year, but I have no regrets.''

Andreychuk disagreed with management's assessment that he's no longer an effective player in what general manager Jay Feaster describes as the "new NHL," but said Thursday he has no regrets about how the team handled his situation.

"The last few hours have been kind of difficult for my family. But it's something that inevitably was going to happen," Andreychuk said during a news conference held across the street from the St. Pete Times Forum in a restaurant bearing the captain's name.

"I know I've not played the way I can. That's been disheartening to me. But I continued to try. ... I still want to be a player. ... To be told you're not going to play any more, that's hard to swallow."
...
"The game's been pretty fast for me for a lot of years," he said, laughing. "I've been able to survive. I don't know if it's any different now."
