Alexander Ovechkin scored a goal against the Phoenix Coyotes in today's game (January 16th, 2006) that is one of the greatest goals in the history of hockey. The goal was so great, I started a thread specifically for discussion of it.

I was out back BBQ'ing some tri-tip when I heard my wife react in disbelief and joy at the same time. When I came in, and through the miracle of Tivo, she showed me what I had missed. All I could say was "Ohhhhhhhh my God!" ohmy.gif

Video will be provided as soon as it's available, and I'd love to hear your description of your reaction the first time you saw it.

Alexander Ovechkin - we are simply not worthy. worshippy.gif

I didn't see the whole game - only some of the 3rd - but are you talking about Washington's 6th goal?

EDIT: I just showed it to Mr.GS35, who said,"Oh !@#$%! Oh man! There should now be an "Ovechkin Rule" where players are not allowed to score on their knees."

On their knees? How about on their shoulder/head?!?

That's a great reaction, though. Thanks for posting it! smile.gif

Most beautiful goal ever. There are no words to describe it.

You need the XVID codec to play his. Or use Media Player Classic or VLC media player.

Goodness - quit worshipping a human being. He isn't God (even if he thinks he is.) Yes, Ovechkin is good. Yes, he has incredible talent. However, he is also human and he isn't perfect. When you sit back and admire him, it only makes it more difficult for him to find a helmet that fits his swollen head. You also get a 3-2 loss in OT by standing around watching him play.

Just saw the goal. Incredible presence of mind and some luck. Unbelievable goal.

I heard he and Crosby were asking for separate zip codes for their egos.

Take it easy, Mrs.B. It's not like I'm suggesting we forfeit our land and possessions to the guy. However, when it comes to playing hockey there is nobody as exciting to watch in the entire world right now. He's the only player on that team with a shred of talent and he's dominating despite the best efforts of every team that plays him. You think teams stand around and watch him? Hardly. They try to stop him but they can't. He's too damned good.

No, I won't be opening a First Church of Ovechkin anytime soon, but I will go out of my way to watch him play hockey every time he takes the ice.

The only player I can compare him too (down to the hanging tongue) is Michael Jordan at his prime.

“I don’t have words to describe it,” said Ovechkin, who scored his second goal of the game by flipping the puck behind his neck while rolling on the ice. “I was down and just tried to shoot it. It was a lucky goal.”

When Wayne Gretzky admires a goal, that says something.

"That was pretty sweet," the Great One said after Alex Ovechkin led the Washington Capitals to a 6-1 rout of Coach Gretzky's Phoenix Coyotes on Monday. "You know, he's a phenomenal player, and he's been a tremendous influence in the game. It's great to see, because he is that good."
...
"The best goal I ever scored," Ovechkin said. "I just went down and shot."

It was his 14th goal in 13 games.

"The kid's amazing," Washington goaltender Brent Johnson said. "I mean, he seems to be on the scoreboard every night with some unbelievable shots. He's got one of the best shots that I've ever seen in the game, and it's just one of the quickest releases."

You have obviously never read any articles or interviews with Ovy...he is not an egomaniac. He's worked hard for his success and if pretty low key about it. He hasn't had the press hailing him as the saviour of all hockey like Crosby has. dry.gif
