Whatever you think of the NHL's product these days, one thing seems to be a constant: The respect players show one another on the ice remains at an all-time low. Now, when a player bends over along the boards, he is considered fair game to get pummeled.

In Cole's case, well, as Carolina GM Jim Rutherford said this week, "A fraction one way and Erik doesn't get hurt at all. A fraction the other way, he could have been..."

The league needs to reexamine this kind of hit during the off-season and come up with a solution on how to better protect players along the boards. Cole is not the first player who has been placed in harm's way. You see it every week somewhere.

Sooner or later, a player will be paralyzed.

Buffalo Sabres coach Lindy Ruff could miss a few games and practices because his 11-year-old daughter was diagnosed with having an unidentified mass on her brain.
